How will the combat system work?

Answer:

The official FAQ states that "combat will be intense, filled with tactical decisions, exploiting monster vulnerabilities and not be an excuse to get an cup of coffee". Some details have been released to back that statement: we will be able to combine our skills and special moves: one can tackle the opponent and the other can give it a flying kick to the head.

Also a mobs' vulnerability depends on the type of weapon. You can target a monster and decide which skills to use. They are testing a skill queue but in the process of finding a balance between passive and active combat that may be dropped again.

When fighting generally you will not loose health but you will be able to evade all damage… as long as you endurance pool hold out. When your endurance pool is empty, you'll start losing health. Some special monsters will hurt your health directly and also events like falling off a cliff will use up your health. When you attack yourself, your stamina pool is used. Stamina regains pretty fast and endurance a bit slower. Losing health however is a serious thing which cannot be easily healed though making a camp will help.

bulletIs there an official statement about combat?

Answer:

Yes! Here is an old quote from the days of MEO:

The spreading shadow of Sauron has brought fear to the Free Peoples of Middle-earth. Prowling monsters now threaten the peaceful folk of town and country, ambushing the weak and harassing the strong. Players who enter Middle-earth will take up arms against these creatures and engage them in combat wherever they are discovered.

The combat system in LOTRO has been carefully crafted to capture the feel of conflict in The Lord of the Rings™. Just as in the books characters will dodge and parry attacks aimed at them, at least until their endurance fails. But once the blows of the enemy begin to strike home injury and unconsciousness quickly follow.

The skills of a character are honed by combat, just as they would be in real life. A player who consistently favors a specific type of weapon will become more proficient with that weapon the more it is used. Once a clumsy farm lad has survived enough encounters with roving Orcs he will find that he is not only stronger but that he can wield his sword with the skill of a true Champion.

If he is lucky, that Champion may even find a legendary weapon whose power increases with use in combat. As such weapons grow in power the characters who own them will learn deadly new skills that could never be duplicated with more commonplace weapons. Characters that choose to wield such weapons can only hope that their fame will someday be as great as Orcrist or Glamdring!

Of course some characters will have far more than just swords and daggers to hunt down the evils of Middle-earth. Each class and race will have unique skills to aid them in their journeys. Magic, leadership, and knowledge of the natural world are all sources of potent offensive and defensive skills for characters and their companions.

The many options provided by weapon and class skills and a system designed to evoke the feel of combat in the epic world of Tolkien make combat in Middle-EarthOnline™ engaging and immerse. We can’t wait to show it off!
