It's expansion day and everything is zany crazy. What do you do? How do you start? Blizzard does an excellent job leading you around with breadcrumbs, but it can get confusing fast with the various changes. At the start, I've added an annex for brand new players to the game who are using their free level 90, which you can skip if you're a seasoned wow pro bro. Otherwise, let's get started with Draenor!

If You're New to WoW (Boosted 90)

You were given a level 90 boost if you purchased the expansion. If you haven't bought the expansion, it's not time to get started, so go and enjoy the regular WoW and come back. Once you're level 90, assuming you used your boost, you'll need to do so starting quests in order to get your first set of gear. Don't worry, this operates as a mini-tutorial on how to play the game. Interestingly enough, the difference between a level 1 and a level 90 is the amount of skills you have, the gameplay is pretty much the same.

As you start off the quests, you'll unlock your equipment and abilities and the game will generally hold your hand the way through. Relax and enjoy your time in Draenor.

Getting Started

The very first thing to do is speak to Khadger. There is one in most major major cities and one outside of the Blasted Lands. Once you speak to him, he will take you to an instanced version of Tanaan Jungle which would be the old Hellfire Pennisula, or well, what it was before it was, if that makes any sense. Anyway, you're going to port straight to an instanced scenario and there is no way to skip it, but you can group with someone else and do it. Here are some tips:

  • Don't worry about dying, it's totally okay. You get a free revive every 3 minutes.
  • Boosted characters after launch are granted skills randomly throughout the following quests, but you can queue for an instance to unlock everything at once or change specs.
  • The first part of the quest will have you work on turning the dark portal off. You're going to get a bit confused by the quest indicators, but most everything is usually down stairs, with the entrances very close to Khadgar. When you reach the end of "The Portal's Power," you will not have to fight Gul'dan.
  • The next part is in the jungle. "Blaze of Glory" requires you to use the quest item next to the huts.
  • In the Kargathar Proving Grounds you'll need to kill 100 NPCs. Just stay alive and kill anything that attacks you as your NPC party will finish everything off.
  • In the cave, you will find an NPC (Yrel for Horde) that gives you a quest, it's in the far back of the cave.
  • Once you finish in the cave, you'll exit and need to take on a cannon. From here it's easy sailing. During "A Taste of Iron" feel free to just ignore the tanks or anything, nothing will fail the quest.

After you're done with the somewhat short introduction quest, you'll be either in Shadowmoon Valley or Frostfire Ridge. The very first quest series is going to unlock your garrison, or base of operations. You'll also, after the first story arc, receive the ability to fly to Ashran which is the PvP quest hub / major city.

Getting Started Tips - The Do's and Don'ts

The following tips should help you avoid common trip-ups:

  • Don't level your professions - you can get up to 700 skill unlocked with a single item (for 100 gold or less, or free with a quest). You don't even have to have a profession to craft, thanks to your garrisons.
  • Don't worry about gear, Tanaan Jungle will give you an almost full set of 500+ ilvl gear.
  • Do not try to level as a healer, although it's possible, it's best to level as DPS just to get through content as quickly as possible.
  • Don't ignore bonus objectives, they're awesome in the sense they're usually easy and give lots of XP. You can find these at the bottom of your quest tracker in areas with bonus objectives.
  • Don't be afraid to use your garrison resources, at the start you can't spend enough to do any damage and the benefits are good early on - conserve when you reach tier 2.
  • Do remember to check your garrison and send followers off on missions as often as possible to level them up.
  • Don't be afraid to explore, treasure is everywhere!
  • Do remember the WoD pre-launch changes: Toys are now in their own collection and out of your bag. Quests are now attached to the map. You have a reagent bank to store resources. There was a stat squish, so don't be surprised if you see new numbers.
  • Do remember that skills adjust as you level up, you don't learn any new skills (outside of a talent) in WoD.

That's about all you need to know to get started in the expansion, see you in Azeroth!
