The Dreadfang or “Taken” legendary sword is one of the best light level 320 swords in the game, and definitely top 2 in best looking weapons. To get the sword into your guardian’s hands you’ll have to complete a chain of quests given by Variks in the Reef outpost.

While most quest lines that offer up an awesome weapon like this require a team of guardians at least one point in the quest line, if you’re a decently geared level 40 you should have no trouble completing it solo.

At the gates

The first step in the quest line is called At the gates. If you’ve installed the April update you should notice that there is a new quest to pick up in the Reef social area. Head there and talk to Variks to grab the At the gates quest and you’ll be on your way.

Pretender on the throne

Your next step is a story mission located on the Dreadnaught so head to orbit and find the new mission on the Dreadnaught map. There’s not a lot to this quest and its rated level 36 so you shouldn’t have any issues so long as you don’t take on too much at one time.

They can run

After you complete the pretender quest you’ll immediately be given the next step “They Can Run”. All you have to do for this part of the quest is collect 20 Echoes of Malok by killing any taken enemies. Your best bet is to reload to the dreadnaught starting area and then make your way through the ship killing any and all taken you run across. It shouldn’t take long to get 20 even though you wont get an Echo for every single taken you kill.

The Court of Oryx is a hot spot for taken if you can’t seem to find any in the other areas of the ship.

Blighted chalice

Once you’ve got your 20 Echoes, head to the tower and speak with Eris Morn. After turning in the Echoes you’ll receive the next step in the quest line.

Jump into orbit and load up the Moon map. You’ll be looking for a new strike called Blighted Chalice. Fortunately, it also offers matchmaking, so even if you don’t have a party you will be auto grouped up with some other guardians to complete it. Either way it’s not very difficult for a level 40 with good gear, just be sure to keep killing the blights to stop the taken from respawning endlessly.

At the end of the strike will be your final fight with Malok. He’s a very straightforward boss fight with one interesting mechanic to be aware of. Shadow Touched will cause your guardian to lose sound and suffer a penalty to movement speed. You’ll know it’s about to happen when the mist rolls out across the ground. When it does, get yourself to cover to avoid being caught in this compromising situation. His weak spot is his head so keep the damage rolling and it shouldn’t take long to down him.

Return to Variks

When Malok is down the quest is over so head back to Variks and collect your prize. The Dreadfang comes in at light level 320 and does void damage which makes it very useful against taken enemies via the Will of Light perk bonus damage.
