Mass Effect 3 Fans Petition for New Ending

Posted Mon, Mar 12, 2012 by Martuk

Mass Effect 3 has been a marvel of storytelling and has managed to invest many players into the well-written characters and dramatic narrative. With Mass Effect 3, Commander Shepard’s journey through the Mass Effect saga came to a close, but the resolution of the story has a lot of fans angry and calling for a new ending from BioWare.

A poll on the BioWare forums has already gained more than 28,000 votes while a petition on Facebook has over 14,000 supporters. The petitions and poll are calling for a different ending given that the original ending choices all leave a bitters/bittersweet conclusion and many unanswered questions, which is likely a part of what Stow was referring to in his review of Mass Effect 3 on the subject of plot holes.

Whether the ending is a gateway for BioWare to craft a new future for the Mass Effect saga, a clever segue into some upcoming DLC or the planned canonical ending to Shepard’s journey is still being speculated on, but one thing is for sure, you know you’ve managed to emotionally invest your players in the game when they become this furious about the end of the story.

The ending could certainly have used a bit more elaboration on a few things (which I won’t get into to avoid spoilers) and some fans are already speculating that this could be a clever tie-in to upcoming DLC. If that's the case, there may be more to the story to come. We'll have to wait and see.

What do you think? Was the Mass Effect 3 ending what you expected? Were you happy with the choices and how things turned out? Tell us what you think in the comments below.

bioware fucked us over

they wont be getting a dime from me until they fix it. and im not one of those people looking for a totally happy ending. im ok with what happened to Shepard, but i want answers as to what happened to everyone else

how the hell did my squad members get back on the Normandy that somehow crashed on a random jungle planet when the damn thing was just above Earth??

what happened to all my allies that were still alive and fighting on Earth??

what happened to all the fleets that were above Earth??

whats going on on Rannoch between the Geth and the Quarians?? (if they made peace)

how did curing the Krogan work in the long run?? (if they were cured)

how are any of the Species managing without the Mass Relays??

this one is a little weird but i know myself and many others are wondering the same thing. what happens with ur LI?? (mainly a question that most of us that has been around from day 1 are wondering)

that all i got off the top of my head but i know there are more

i just finished it and you have valid reasons for hating the game, I guess you were a bit more invested in the story than I was. Playing though all 3 i don't feel short changed one bit. End was a bit off but hey still a great experience. I hope they don't change it cause it will be a precedent and set an example to gaming companies, they must owe up to their intended endings whether we like it or not.

the actual ending to the game is fine....in a way

the ending itself doesnt really need to be changed, there are just a ton of questions that need to be answered for the game to be complete

The Mass Effect trilogy was the greatest series of games I had ever played - except for the last ten minutes of the third game.

What a tragedy. I felt as though I had been punched in the gut, repeatedly, then had my heart pulled out and stomped on. No successful game should do this. I do not spend $80 to feel terrible, and be totally depressed about all the hours I spent playing and all the future hours I imagined playing, but can never do now that I have such a sour taste in my mouth.

The ending just made no sense, what so ever. Terrible.

I couldn't agree more. I don't play games to feel bad, I play games to feel exhilarated. The series was brilliant, but the ending really exploited our emotions and I resent that. The ending was so depressing I don't think I can even replay the game. What a waste.

You're preachinh to the choir.I had exactly the same feeling. This just can't end like that.

I COULDN"T AGREE MORE!!! To many unanswered questions. Kinda like a movie that's over...but you're not sure if it's over...so you sit in your seat a while longer...waiting for it to be over...!!!???

An additional issue is really that video gaming became one of the all-time largest forms of fun for people of nearly every age. Kids engage in video games, plus adults do, too. The particular XBox 360 is amongst the favorite gaming systems for many who love to have a huge variety of activities available to them, in addition to who like to experiment with live with others all over the world. Thank you for sharing your ideas.

You guys the ending is completely genius. The ending is Adam and Eve on a new planet. A new beginning to life. Which the Stargazer references. Take notice, stargazer and the boy are on the same exact planet that the Normandy crashed on. Synth is Joker and EDI as adam and eve. Destroy reapers shows Joker and Ashley standing together, as adam and eve. A new cycle of life without the threat of reapers.

Joker, Garrus, and Vega.....im pretty sure i know who Eve would be out of the group but wtf

You are 100% wrong. I don't invest hours of my time into a game where all you can do is lose. Yes, if you don't have anyway to survive in the game, which equates to winning the game, why bother playing at at all. They know it too, otherwise why not just call it a victory when you die in the middle of the game. No, instead you get to restart at a saved position and try again.
These idiots decided to get all artsy fartsy with the ending. I wasted my hours of playing and wasted my money buying the game. I won't make that mistake again.

I think this ending can have bennifits for DLC which I thik would be good but as far as the ending I had it where joker ashely and james come out of the normandy, and all this other crap happen I think that us gamers need a better ending or DLC that would resolve this problem now I see where you are coming from MAZE but this is not what the mass effect gamers want, but I see where you are coming from Gamer tag master kenji xbox live.

I honestly just didn't like getting connected to this great universe and the people and how everything worked with this game just to get the big screw you at the end. I loved Mass effects 1, 2, and 3 until the end. I know I'm not the only person who feels this way, and whatevereother reasons people have to want new endings they still want one and well what crime would they be commiting by making a new ending, or something else like, hell I don't know, Mass effect 4? (I have no clue how or what that would be.) All in all im disappointed and if the reasons I have been hearing are the reasons for these "unfortunate" endings then that's sad. By the way I heard that the reason they made this ending was because the original ending or endings were leaked and they didn't want the story to be out before the game was even out. If that is true then I would like to know what the original endings were and if it was really worth to make this. Sorry Bioware you really pissed people off.

I have to admit bioware did a great job ruining three of my all time favorite games in 5 minutes. But if this is a plan for a DLC it would be cool.

I wouldn't be suprised to see that the DLC is equally disappointing.

There's absolutely no true and significant differences between the endings. The game itself is fantastic. Their final moments however, completely voided hundreds of hours of player choice that Bioware promised would have a significant influence. People say this isn't the audience's story, and they completely miss the point of the majority of fans' anger:

“There are many different endings. We wouldn’t do it any other way. How could you go through all three vampaigns playing as your Shepard and then be forced into a bespoke ending that everyone gets? But I can’t say any more than that…

Whether you're happy or angry at the ending, know this: it is an ending. BioWare will not do a "Lost" and leave fans with more questions than answers after finishing the game.

I honestly think the player base is going to be really happy with the way we've done it. You had a part in it. Every decision you've made will impact how things go. The player's also the architect of what happens."

That quote's straight from Gamble himself. *This*, is why gamers are so outraged. It's not simply that the endings are bad, but that they completely lack any true agency and variety, thus leading to any replays with other Shepards being virtually pointless.

I want my Shepard back. What happen to all fleet which fought in the first assoult? are every species got back to theyr own homeworlds? if u know the ending, like me, we can guess no becouse the way back are close. Mass effect players are people whom ask in real life if there are other species in the universe, this game is the more close aswar to their questions, the game is also a lot of enjoyable, and whit those actitude is very easy become attached to the carachter who represent us. Btw, the best ending, the green one, can leave space to a dlc where, for once (i knwo Shep were already rescue in ME2, but we didnt play the rescue part), the crew can came in aid for the Commander, so a dlc whit james as leader of the rescue team if u haven't get an relationship whit any of ur crew, or a team leader can be the love intesest, for example mine is Liara, so from the savegame Liara will lead the rescue team. Dialogue: remember what Shepard always said "nobody will be left behind". From the planet, were apparently all crew members has landed/crash whit the Normandy, jeff, tali, edi will start to repair the ship, the rescue team will start to explore the planet to find some tool to use, probe, crash landing site or a colony. Once the ship is ready will explore the nebula were they are, as u know no need mass relay to explore a nebula. Here they will find tools to build a temporary mass reelay. Also dont forget, the reaper are destroy or disabled, but they have created an army from million of people for each species, so the biggest threat is no more, but there are still, husks, cannibal and so on around. Also sorry for my bad english.

The ending was anti-climactic, hastily and poorly-written, not to mention near plagiarized from another franchise. Mass Effect fans wanted anything BUT a world-reset button. However, that is what we got. I feel as if BioWare has spit in my face!

The ending was so rubbish im shocked, what a waste of time effort and money

hope the idea that the ending is an indoctrination attempt is right, so in this case Shep have never been in the cytadel whit TIM and Anderson it was an "recostruction of him fight the indictrination attempt" where Anderson is his sanity and TIM his indoctrination. This mean the right choice is the destruction, but as a "mind fight" u dont destroy the reapers (and neither the mass relay) but theyr attempt to indoctrinate Shep, so the commander is still alive under the rubble of the reaper beam before he enter in his (mind fight indoctrination) citadel, this can explain why the catalyst is the child which Shep feel guildy becouse he did whatch him die, and ofcorse a DLC whit Shep awaking from the rubble and kik some reapers ass again.
