Artix Entertainment knows how to throw an in-game event and they're not shy about trying to make it elaborate. However, if you're the superstitious type, Friday the 13th may not have been the best choice of times for a huge in-game event as Artix soon found out. With a huge in-game event planned that featured most of the storyline using voice overs from voice actor George Lowe, rock musicians Voltaire and Kimberly from One-Eyed Doll, AdventureQuest Worlds (AQW) would be in for an even bigger event than they had expected.
Famous voice actor George Lowe made his grand appearance as the main NPC for the event, telling creepy campfire ghost stories with the help of rock musicians Voltaire and Kimberly from One-Eyed Doll. Nearly 90% of the event was voiceovered by these talented celebs, allowing the players more time to battle on and less time spent on reading. Yeah, we know what gamers like.
Once the time for the event arrived, the curse of Friday the 13th struck and Artix was the victim of its own success. So many people tried to log into the special event that the 11 servers crashed almost immediately. While this didn't seem like a huge problem at the time as a simple server restart would fix things right up, Artix soon learned that it wasn't quite so simple as not only had the AQW servers crashed, but the event managed to bring down the whole network, which included Artix's other 5 games. Despite the technical problems, Artix was able to rebound and push the event forward.
Once our programmers got the network back up and running, massive amounts of players flooded back in game to experience a Friday the 13th Event unlike any other. Although we had our fair share of bad luck and fearful moments, we are readily looking forward until the next one.
