Don’t expect a new expansion for The Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO) in 2014. Executive Producer Kate Paiz penned her latest update to the community today to reflect on the content released in 2013. Not the least of which is the recently launched Helm’s Deep expansion and its extensive class revamp and more.

Looking ahead to 2014, Paiz confirmed that LOTRO will be taking a break from expansions next year to focus on improving and revamping much of the game’s existing content and systems as well as adding new regions to explore. Based on feedback from LOTRO’s player council, those new lands will be free for VIP subscribers. Keep that free for VIP note in mind as you read this next part.

Turbine will take a different approach to its usual flow of content development in 2014 by adding new content quarterly. One of the first things that players will get to see in the March 2014 update is the addition of Fangorn Forest and the flooding of Isengard following the battle of the Ents. Later in the year players will see other iconic locals added such as the Paths of the Dead and the Dead Marshes along with the first steps on the road to Gondor. Paiz also vowed to continue to develop festival content and indicated that Turbine may finally be revisiting the inventory system given the limited amount of space.

In closing, Paiz touched on plans to revisit the housing system in 2014 along with a “secret surprise” that was made possible by the new class changes. But we’ll have to wait to find out what that is since all we got from this update was literally just a “secret surprise.” In any case, it looks as though Turbine will be trying to step up their development game for LOTRO in 2014.
