Razer, whose product lineup is reaching the point that they can have their own boutique stores, purchased rights to the OUYA software, leading to the final and last chapter of the OUYA struggle. The OUYA came on the scene several years ago as a crowdfunded anti-big-console device that was supposed to liberate the community from the console big three. After I believe were a few delays, the OUYA launched, with mostly the functionality of Android sticks - the unique aspect of it was the software and controller, more so than the actually device itself. This is important to understand because Razer were only interested in the software, which has been developed constantly since launch.

Current Ouya owners can breath a sigh of relief:

In the near future, Razer will be providing existing OUYA users with a clear path of migration to the more advanced Forge TV micro-console and Serval controller bundle. Razer’s intention is to allow OUYA users to bring their games, controllers, and accounts to the Cortex TV platform on the Forge micro-console, advancing the experience of Android gaming on TV that they have previously enjoyed. Additionally, Razer is planning deep product discounts for incoming OUYA users to purchase Razer hardware, and a spate of freebies, giveaways, and promotions to enjoy on their new Forge consoles.

It looks like good guy Razer will be handing out some deep discounts to let current OUYA users transfer over into the Razer ecosystem. This is the end of the line for the OUYA, as the team, software, and everything expect the hardware has been acquired by Razer. Razer is going to be moving everything into their Cortex for Android TV system (games, shows, etc.) and the OUYA name will be used to publish games for Android TV. According to TechCrunch, console support will remain for 12 months out of Razer's goodwill.

I think this is a rather healthy thing to happen for current OUYA users and business as usual beyond that. OUYA has been apparantly publishing over Android TV devices, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that Razer would want their hands on that expanding part of the business, while moving past the now depreciated hardware.

You can read the full press release over at Razer and keep your eyes peeled if you're a current OUYA console owner for updates on how Razer is going to move you over into their camp.
