But to try to beat WoW at its own game is a mistake, says Kern. And if you do try to go head-to-head with Blizzard's beast, expect to shell out plenty of money.

"To compete with WoW plus its expansions, I think that you are getting up there [in price], especially when you layer in the cost of next generation production values," he says.

"WoW is very good at elevating production values for MMOs in general, but the target is moving. If you're still trying to do WoW-style graphics, you're looking very distant from a BioShock or any sort of next-gen game."
