Gamasutra is reporting that publisher Jagex has pulled the plug on its free-to-play strategy game, 8Realms. According to the report, the studio confirmed that 8Realms has been shut down for failure to meet expectations.

During the 8Realms beta it has become clear that the game doesn't meet our high expectations for success and we are therefore channeling our focus on other exciting opportunities in the pipeline.

Develop is also reporting that a source close to the project has stated that 8Realms only managed to attract 10% of users that were needed to turn a profit. As part of the closure, Develop’s report indicates that the publisher may suffer some layoffs as a result.
