For the sixth year running, Sony has selected its choice for this years Gamers in Real Life (G.I.R.L.) Scholarship award with Esther Wu of Brooklyn, New York. The G.I.R.L. Scholarship was established to encourage women to pursue a career in the gaming industry.
"It's exhilarating to be selected for this amazing opportunity to work alongside some of the industry's best game artists at SOE in California," said Wu. "I think this competition is important because it represents a stepping stone for artists and helps build awareness about gender in the work environment."
Wu is a student of art at Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia and will receive the $10,000 scholarship from Sony to help pay what are increasingly painful tuition costs and other educational expenses. She will also have a chance to spend 10 weeks as a paid intern at SOE's headquarters in San Diego. After graduation, Wu hopes to work as a concept artist developing AAA video games.
As part of the submission competition, scholarship finalists were asked to submit two pieces of original concept art inspired by PlanetSide 2 or EverQuest II and an essay about their views of women in the gaming industry. Submissions were reviewed and selected by a panel of SOE judges. Wu selected PlanetSide 2 for her artwork and you can see some of her concept art submissions below.
Ten Ton Hammer would like to congratulate Esther Wu and we look forward to seeing her future contributions to the industry.
