I missed this piece of news on Friday, but I'm glad I found it this morning. Star Citizen the trading and space combat simulator which has made well over $40,000,000 since its inception, is running a competition to allow teams of fans to design ships. In this fourth episode of "The Next Great Startship" the modding competition is on sprint mode.

Get ready for the fourth epsiode of The Next Great Starship, the modding competition that gives fans a chance to create a space ship to be used in Chris Roberts’ upcoming epic space sim game, Star Citizen™. Sponsors for the competition include Alienware, AMD, Autodesk, Crytek, Cologne Game Lab, Maingear, Wacom and YouTube. The Next Great Starship airs Fridays at 6 pm Eastern/3 pm Pacific. Fans are encouraged to join the Roberts Space Industries

The video itself is lengthy at around 30 minutes, but it's definitely a fun watch. It has plenty of the modding teams super excited about the next designs and has a chat with David Hobbins the concept artist at Cloud Imperium Games. Even if you aren't interested in Star Citizen, the footage of how David Hobbins works is well worth watching.

Despite that blip, Lewis has worked his way through countless games in the genre in search of something that comes close to his much loved (and long time dead) Neocron. Having written for several gaming networks before Ten Ton Hammer, Lewis likes to think he knows a thing or two about what makes an MMOG and its player-base tick.
