How many takes does it take to get "the right shots" in a motion-captured game? Over 8000 according to Funcom Combat Expert (for real) and Motion Capture Specialist Ketil Støren.
Motion capture is a state-of-the-art technology used for recording realistic game animations from physical movement. For developers that can afford the initial costs, "mocap" offers animation at least as fluid and realistic as hand-drawn or "keyframe" animation, with far less time (and money) spent per-animation. Ketil shows us some of his moves during our recent Funcom Oslo site tour, then shows us how these motions are applied to character models in Age of Conan.
