Launch Survival 101

It's been many years since the first MMOG launched. Even as far back as
Ultima Online, launches have always been plagued by a
substantial amount of downtime as the developers tweak the live game
and make it more playable. Yet, as much as we recognize this scenario
as part and parcel of any MMOG launch, players hit the forums to
complain as soon as a crash or any extended down-time occurs.

With the launch of Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning around the
corner, we take a look at a few simple things style="font-style: italic;">not to do at
launch. Want to make sure that you're not "that" guy? Then you'll want
to read The Rules of Launch-gagement.

We
expect perfection out of the games we play. We gripe at small details
that 5 years ago we would've accepted as commonplace. You can visit the
forums of any game at any time and find a mass of complaining that can
only be rivaled by that of a 5 year old child on a car ride across the
United States. Gamers today whine, they gripe, and they even threaten.
We've forgotten what things used to be like and how good we have it now
and no where is this more true than during the launch phase of a new
game.
