There are a lot of ideas that can add to a games immersion that don't help just the roleplayers.

Development of Roleplaying Functionality

Role-players are without a doubt some of the most creative of the Online gamers. Like them or not, you have to admire their ability to have fun with just about anything. This week Aurelius1011 came up with a list of things he would like to see Funcom add to the game that could help support the roleplay atmosphere. However, roleplayers won't be the only ones to benefit from these things if Funcom were to implement them into the game. Let's face it, one of the key hooks to any good MMOG is immersion, and immersion, is a key element to sucking a player into a world and making them part of it whether they're a roleplayer or not. A lot of the community responding have added some good ideas of their own and aside from the random troll, yes, those individuals who have nothing constructive to say and scream at their monitor all day, the feedback has been pretty good. Funcom US Community Manager Glen 'Famine' Swan also dropped in to offer some feedback to some of the ideas.

I know this is going to get a few angry glares from the folks who aren't too interested in this sort of thing, but in my experience in other games, most of the questions I have below are just as relevant to raiders and pvpers as they are RPers (everyone, regardless of how much you care about telling a story, loves trophies and places to display them, for example).

So... I'd like to ask Funcom what, if any, plans it has for the following functionality:

  • What's planned for player housing (or if its planned at all)?
  • Will we be able to decorate buildings in our guild cities?
  • Will there be crafted items that can be dyed?
  • Will there be craftable social clothing?
  • Will there be additional social functionality (character descriptions, family trees, surnames, languages, etc.)?
  • Will there be additional guild city functionality (being able to give players outside our guild access to our guild city by character name without being grouped, having seats or benches we can sit on, etc.)?
  • Will there be a reputation system that has an impact on NPC aggressiveness (for example, someone with a negative Stygian rep will be attacked by guards in Khemi, or someone with a positive Ymirish rep will see Ymirish NPCs as green and be able to purchase unique items from them)?
  • Will there be additional guild functionality (being able to assign responsibilities to ranks, being able to create rank names)?

Letter from the Game Director – December 5th 2008

Funcom Game Director Craig 'Silirrion' Morrison posted another 'Letter from the Game Director' recently explaining the delay of the server mergers and how Funcom will proceed as they move forward. Most people understand that the reason for the delay is to prevent loss of information and to keep from having more problems than solutions once the mergers are done. However, there are a few that chose to stomp their feet and scream, "I WANT IT NOW!" It has been a long time coming and may very well be overdo, but it's best to do it the right way and not have any mistakes afterwards. We can at least commend Funcom for knowing that. After all, how well do you think things would go over if they merged now and you logged in with half your items missing?

Drunken Brawling has been a long awaited mechanic, but whether we will ever see it or not is still unknown.

Post your character AOC (A thread which was famous in Hellgate London forum)

This thread resurfaced after being absent for a time and provides players a nice place to show off some good screenshots of their avatars. If you have a good, funny, or interesting image of your character you would like to share post it here for all to see.

Drunken Brawling...will we ever get it?

Drunken Brawling was one of the highly anticipated small mechanics that was initially suppose to be in at launch, but the mechanic was removed due to time restraints. Like some of the ideas in our first thread, this mechanic could add a great layer of immersion to Hyboria and give players a chance to beat the crap out of each other while they can hardly see strait. However, many people still would like to see this make its way into the game. Game Director Craig 'Silirrion' Morrison dropped in to let people know that there is a chance that we might one day see this mechanic back on the radar.

I think the drunken brawling is one of those features we might like to see come back at some stage, in some form. Right now though it's not on the drawing board for any of the upcoming updates as there are other areas being focused on. It might just appear at some stage though...

(that's not a promise of anything just an honest answer, it was always a cool idea and uniquely in keeping with the license, but we would want to do it properly and make sure it was fun and worthwhile before we introduced it. It's not something I would do for the sake of it because we talked about it prior to launch)

I know you have all heard of the show 'Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader' so I will ask you this. If you were faced with a question you might not know the answer to, you might be careful to avoid sounding like a complete ditz while trying to think of the answer. However, this contestant failed to do that and managed to elevate herself into the high held realm of the incredibly stupid by simply opening her mouth once to often.
