A Little Knowledge Goes A Long Way

March 3rd, 2008 - By Dalmarus

With any change the community finds making its way into Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, I think it's inevitable that worry will ensue. Over the last two weeks, you've watched me get on here and ramble on about the various topics that have gotten the community up in arms. There are still a number of issues we could talk about in that regard, but I think it's time go in a lighter direction. At least for one week anyway, haha.

The Ten Ton Hammer guild is continuing to gather numbers and a life of its own. This past week, a number of members got together and hit the hive near Qa Riverbank. It's the small things like this that bring a smile to my face. It's nice to see an idea begin as nothing but an offhand thought and watch it bloom into a thing of beauty. This Saturday, we'll be hitting Riftseeker's Torrent. If you're interested in joining, simply head over here to sign up.

As the time nears for this weekend's dungeon run, I've begun checking out a wide number of classes that I hadn't tried before. I started off with a rogue and I have to admit that I'm pretty impressed with his ability to sneak into various areas and do some exploring. In my goal to eventually have maps of each dungeon within Vanguard, I may have to find myself leveling this character further for his stealthing ability alone. Never mind the small fact that he packs some serious burst DPS in a number of situations. That's not a bad little bonus for a character to have if I do say so myself.

The other class I started earlier this week is the Psionicist. It's too early to really make any serious judgment call on the class, but so far, I have to say he's pretty interesting. I think there's a decent amount of potential waiting for me further down the line and I'm anxious to get there to see it.

I think it's important to try out other classes for a number of reasons. Aside from the fact that everyone gets a bit bored with their main characters at some point during that avatar's lifespan, it's a great way to get a little more insight into the different abilities of your fellow players.

Having a general idea of other classes’ abilities is great on the surface, but for some people (myself included) logically knowing about these abilities and actually having used them in a combat situation are two completely different things. I've lost count of the amount of times I've been playing a group and been amazed at a number of the unknown talents another player has displayed. The first time I saw a rogue start mezzing a group of mobs, I almost fell out of my chair. Or how about the first time a Bloodmage gives you a symbiote that allows your character to cast a heal spell?

It's the little things like this that will keep me playing Vanguard for a long time to come. I've been here since shortly before release and continue to learn new things about the game on a constant basis. The number of classes and the diverse skills spread between them adds a lot to an already deep game and I think it's one of Vanguard's biggest strengths.

With Game Update #4 having already gone live on the Test Server, I don't imagine it will be a very long time before we see it brought over to the live servers. With each update, there are a number of changes we're all subjected to, but as I sign off from this week's newsletter, I'd like to ask the community one small favor. Before we react to the changes in anger, take a few moments to think about the things you really enjoy about the game. Even if there are upcoming changes you're not in favor of, it may take some of the sting away. It may also help you give the new changes a try with a clearer perspective.

Safe travels and happy hunting to you all!
