Death By Sparkles?
September 8th, 2008 - By
Week after week, you've read my Chronicles and listened to
my thoughts on Vanguard:
Saga of Heroes
and the community that revolves around it.
There have been more times than I can count that I've been extremely
pleased with the reputation of our community, all due in no small part
to the actions of the majority of our population. There have also been
times where I've wanted to pull my hair out in frustration, trying to
figure out just what the heck is going on with some of our members.
Before I offend anyone (which is probably going to happen anyway), let
me get a few disclaimers out here first. Number one, just like it says
at the bottom of this article, these are simply my opinions. We all
have them; I'm just voicing mine. Number two, just like any other time
a person is talking about a general group, I realize there are plenty
of people in that group these topics may not apply to.
Photoshoot on the Red Carpet?
I don't want to see any letters being sent to my editor telling him
I've told everyone in the game to quit whining, quit the game, and move
out of their mother's basement. That's not what I'm about, and I'd like
to think the majority of folks reading this today know me well enough
to understand this. I've been playing since shortly before release and
if I didn't love the game and the community that surrounds it, I
wouldn't be here writing this now.
No more stalling. Let's get right to it. Take a deep breath and repeat
"Sparkles are not the end of the world and the developers of Vanguard
are not doing everything in their power to destroy the game."
While it might seem like I'm making a rather extreme statement, I don't
think it's any more extreme than the amazing amount of backlash that's
been found in the last couple of weeks on the official forums. Between
the sparkle complaints and the hardcore server requests, it's all
gotten a bit extreme. I won't argue that sometimes (and perhaps more
than sometimes), the sparkles are a little too much. I agree I'd also
like to see a button in our settings we could use to toggle the effect
on and off. I think that'd be great. I also have absolutely zero
problems with the community voicing their concerns over the issue and
providing examples of places where the amount is simply crazy.
That said however, I'd like to point everyone's attention to a
post by Vanguard Lead Designer, Silius
with a screenshot highlighting the example. In it, he states, "Please
post any egregious sightings like this on test with screenshots if you
can. We tried to avoid marking clumps of IOs like this since they are
easy to spot when following the travel journal entries." Maybe I'm
crazy, or perhaps I'm just reading it wrong, but in my mind, that tells
me, "Hey guys, you're absolutely right. The effect was not meant to do
anything like this, so if you see something crazy out there, please let
us know where so we can take some time
and fix the issue."
Even Dark Elves need to just
For those that say you've already done so, great! Keep it up. For those
that haven't, you'll find no sympathy from me on this side. Sorry, but
that's just the way it is. Just like any class changes that take place
on the Test Server, if you don't take any time to log in and try them
out yourself, then make suggestions, my single word to you when a
change comes through you don't like is, "Suffer". For those that do log
in, post feedback, and are still unhappy with the changes made, I
honestly sympathize with you, and still commend you on going over and
voicing your opinions.
In short (or perhaps not quite so short today), time may be running out
on Test, but get over there and try out as many things as you can.
of the drastic amounts of feedback received from the players, the
has made a number of changes to the new character models, and they look
absolutely awesome. They feel far more natural and I can't wait for
them to go live. Examples of odd issues are still being sent in and
addressed, so save yourself some possible heartache and try them out
