Vanguard: Saga of Heroes Going Free-to-Play

Posted Wed, Mar 21, 2012 by Martuk

It’s been rumored for a while now that Vanguard: Saga of Heroes might be joining the ranks of the free-to-play. Today Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) confirmed the news in Vanguard’s March Producer’s Letter. While no solid date has been given for the transition, the letter notes that the model will be something similar to the one used by EverQuest and should be arriving sometime this summer.

There is some other good news in the announcement. As part of the transition, SOE is getting a new development team put together for Vanguard: Saga of Heroes that has some familiar faces like Creative Director Salim "Silius" Grant, Technical Director Todd "Hobart" Schmidt and Director of Development Andy Sites. The team is promising more frequent updates, which the game has been sorely lacking for quite some time. The first update is scheduled to deploy by the end of this week followed by a rollout of new information.

Over the next several weeks, we plan to roll-out individual "spotlight" pieces for each team member, to give you an opportunity to get to know each of them.  In addition, you can expect to see more frequent game updates, as well as more detailed information regarding the upcoming free-to-play aspects of Vanguard.

While I hate the f2p model, this might just save this title if its not too late. If they get a solid player base I'll go back in a heart beat.

I played the heck out of this game when it was first released. This is probably the best piece of MMO news I've heard in years. It is not the F2P that is bringing me back, it is the talk of new development. After years of playing MMOs, my two favorites will always be Everquest and Vanguard. VG will always have a special place in my heart and now I have a computer that should run it with ease. I am subbing tonight when I get home. Awesome news, indeed!

EQ and VG were my favorite games. I tried all the others except the space MMOs but I keep returning to EQ and VG websites to see how they're doing. I stopped VG because of the lack of development, insane amount of grinding and how they scratched off the AA idea. I'll definitely be checking it out again, I just hope they dont do it like EQ's F2P. I played it for 20 minutes and hated it, (lost half my items, money, and couldnt wear my augmented gear LOL, ect)

I enjoyed VG,the problem is even after years of being out they still haven't even implemented character abilities that were supposed to be in game at launch.Hopefully this will change when it goes FTP.

Vanguard: Saga of Heroes celebrates its 7th anniversary with a rainbow whale companion gift, contests, and bonus events.
