Ten Ton Hammer Video of the Day

Coolest Game You've (Probably) Never Heard Of

Imagine that Vindictus and Guild Wars 2 had a love child. Then teach it some Assassin's Creed-style parkour shit and horseback riding (with drifting) ala Red Dead Redemption and you've got Black Desert Online, quite possibly the most fascinating game in development that you've never heard of.

Black Desert is in the works by a new South Korean studio called Pearl Abyss. We don't know a lot about it yet, except that it's a free-to-play sandbox MMO with plans for supporting ambitious features like strategy-based siege combat, an in-depth housing system, action combat, a weather system complete with cyclones, and stunning visuals. We've also heard that the day and night cycle will affect gameplay, with monsters becoming more dangerous at night and different quests opening up. (Admit it, you've missed Kithicor Forest.)

Based on the rough translations on Pearl Abyss's official Facebook page, I'm guessing it's going to be a while before we see Black Desert localized for the Western world, but I hope they prove me wrong, because I see that ranger leaping around (at 2:33) and I want in. I'd possibly even donate my daughter's kitten to science for a chance to play with the character creator because, as this extended trailer shows, characters in Black Desert look amazing. (Just kidding. I love kittens.)

So, here's a quick rundown of some of the things we know about Black Desert so far:

  • It's an f2p sandbox MMO
  • It features action combat
  • You can have fun stormin' da castle
  • Some classes are gender locked.
  • It's got horseback riding where you can go all Tokyo Drift (or Seoul Drift, maybe?)
  • Parkour, bitches!
  • The housing looks fantastically detailed
  • Scenery and character models = amazing
  • The weather and day/night sequence affects gameplay
  • You know that thing Legolas did with the ginormous oliphaunt in The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King? Check 6:00 in the Black Desert trailer. Yeah.

All I know is that when I first saw this trailer I knew I wanted to play this game. Did it give you a warm, tingly feeling, too? Leave a comment!
