5 Video Game Items as Rare as Winning the Lottery

Any experienced gamer would know that games tend to have rare items that are difficult to find. But few actually know exactly how insanely difficult some of these items can be to get. In this article, we have listed 5 drops from video games that are just as rare as winning the lottery:

  1. Mirror in Path of Exile - 1 in 26,000,000
  2. Tyrael’s Might in Diablo 2 - 1 in 3,300,000
  3. Uncut Onyx From a Gem Bag in OSRS - 1 in 2,500,000
  4. Mythic Goldfish in Fortnite - 1 in 1,000,000

1. Mirror in Path of Exile - 1 in 26,000,000

The rarest item in Path of Exile - a popular action RPG from Grinding Gear Games - is a Mirror of Kalandra. While developers haven’t shared official numbers on its drop rate,
a user on Reddit calculated it to be 1 in 26 million which is absolutely mind-boggling. This is the same odds as winning the jackpot in Lotto America.

I have actually found a Mirror myself which I did after 2,700 hours in the game. While rewarding, I can’t help to think that I should have played the lottery instead.

The Mirror of Kalandra is a usable item that can be used on any rear item in Path of Exile to duplicate it. This makes it incredibly valuable as some perfect or near-perfect rolls in the game are actually harder to get than the mirror itself.

2. Tyrael’s Might in Diablo 2 - 1 in 3,300,000

Action RPGs are known for their rare drops and thus, we find no other than Blizzard Entertainment’s hit game from 2000 on our second spot. The rarest item in Diablo 2 is said to be Tyrael’s Might which is a unique armor. It drops only from a few endgame areas with the best drop rate being from unique bosses such as Nihlathak and the very last one, Baal.

The odds of finding the armor are estimated to be 1 in 3.3 million which is about the same as winning $1 million in Italy’s MillionDAY lottery. Despite its rarity, Tyrael’s Might is ironically seldom used in the game as its stats are not considered favorable to other armors such as Enigma. It is more of a trophy item.

As a side note, the Zod rune in Diablo 2 shares similar odds to Tyrael’s Might. They are just slightly better, having a drop chance of 0.000033% compared to 0.000031%.

3. Uncut Onyx From a Bag of Gems in OSRS - 1 in 2,500,000

Old School RuneScape, also known as OSRS, is a retro-style MMORPG that uses gems among other items for crafting. One of these gems is an Onyx that can be used to make very powerful jewelry in the game.

A common way of obtaining gems is to buy a bag of 40 random ones from a merchant. Now, this is where it gets crazy. Rolling an Onyx gem only has a 1 in 100 million chance per gem, which means that the odds of getting one from an entire bag of 40 is 1 in 2.5 million.

It should be said though that Uncut Onyxes can also drop from three bosses in the game - Zulrah, Skotizo and Zalcano. Farming these, the drop rate is a lot better as it ranges from 1 in 1,000 to 1 in 8,000.

4. Mythic Goldfish in Fortnite - 1 in 1,000,000

While PUBG defined the Battle Royal genre, Fortnite made it a huge success with over 350 million users reported in 2020. Most gamers would know that Battle Royal is all about killing your opponents and surviving to be the last man standing. However, what you may not know is that Fortnite has fishing.

In the game, there are lakes that can be fished for items and weapons. One of these items, which the vast majority of players will never get to experience is the Mythic Goldfish. This is a throwable item that inflicts 200 damage, instantly killing a player.

The odds of hooking the Mythic Goldfish are 1 in 1 million which is pretty insane. However, the item is very powerful as it can be picked up and reused after it’s been thrown. It does not carry over from one game to another though.

5. Dragon Lore Skin in CS:GO - 1 in 250,000

Ever since Valve released Counter-Strike in 2000, this has been one of the most competitively played games in the world with Global Offensive being the latest iteration of it. In addition to planting bombs, killing players and winning matches, opening loot boxes for skins and trading these is a big part of this first-person shooter game.

There are tons of rare skins that can drop from the loot boxes, but the rarest of them all is the Dragon Lore AWP skin which has a 1 in 250,000 chance of appearing. This makes the item incredibly valuable. At the time of writing this article, the skin is listed for sale at $10,000. However, it has sold for much higher in the past.

A noteworthy mention is a signed copy of the skin, which was signed by the professional player Skadoodle. In 2018, this skin was reported selling for $61,000.
