MMORPG, Massive Multiplayer
Online Role Playing Game--the term role
playing is in the title, but not everyone follows that particular
fancy. I spend a lot of time trying to decide what I want my main
character in a MMO to be. I consider hair color, eye color, starting
location, religion, class, all of the things that are key to making my
main, well...me. The excitement of Vanguard is in part the
limitless
character creation options the developers have discussed. Many people
have expressed their feelings of excitement over character creation and
even detailed how long they think they will spend creating their new
selves to venture into Telon. Like many of them I am salivating over
the options Ill have in making my new toon.
Then there are the questions that arise: will I spend my time
developing a life and history for my main? Or will I end up spending
more time just adventuring and interacting with my guild, ignoring the
role playing part? Its hard to say at this point, though I can make
guesses. Even
when I spend time adventuring and not actively role playing I think
about my characters personality and life. I love role playing outside
of MMOs so I have trouble believing I will ever fully separate it from
my characters, though I dont typically spend a lot of time role
playing while in the game, at least outside of the fantasy in my mind.
It is certainly something Id enjoy doing more of depending on the
group Im in, and developing my character is something Im very much
looking forward to as time goes on.
There are some people who do not enjoy the role playing aspect of
MMORPGs. I suppose some people even find it annoying to run into role
players when they are just trying to find that one hidden person in
their city, or while trying to find a group to do some harvesting or
experience gathering with. I can certainly understand the frustration
that could come from a
person who refuses, even in a private conversation, to break character
at all and help a fellow player out.
Then again I am sure the role
player finds it equally frustrating to find a person who insists upon
dragging them out of their characters world and into the less exciting
world of non-role playing adventuring. Which side are you on?
