After the success of The Witcher trilogy for consoles, CD Projekt Red tried to gain even more followers by releasing a companion game for mobile. The Witcher Battle Arena was brought out for Android, iOS, and Windows Phone in 2015, but the servers were closed at the end of the year and the game was then unplayable. At the time, the game could have been considered too niche. But now, with Netflix’s The Witcher series generating a lot of hype, it could be the perfect time to bring this game back.

Netflix’s The Witcher came out at the end of 2019 to a serious amount of fanfare. Despite being vastly different to Game of Thrones, it drew comparisons to the HBO fantasy in its scale and ambition. It was met with a mixed critical reception, with newcomers to the universe claiming to have felt confused. Some critics were even more scathing. Those familiar with the games or books, however, praised the series and thought it was worthy of the legacy created by CD Projekt Red’s offerings.

If Netflix wants to attract fresh audiences to the episodes on offer and for future seasons, it could think about commissioning the Polish developers to bring back The Witcher Battle Arena for mobile. The mobile market is flourishing, and a lot of successful franchises find that tapping into it is key to that success. Players who download and enjoy a mobile game tend to seek out other ways to experience that theme in different sections of the media.

One of the reasons for the immense success of Game of Thrones was the fact that the name was virtually everywhere. One of the most lucrative sectors for the series was the iGaming industry, where the GOT online slot is considered among the top games. Vikings followed suit and there is now a slot based on the historical drama to drum up a larger fan base. The games were made by Microgaming and NetEnt, who are two of the best developers on the market. In a recent post by 777 casino, one of the selling points of the casinos was that they offered titles from these studios, which highlights the strong reputation these two developers have.

The Witcher Battle Arena was designed as an MMO with RPG elements, but it received bad reviews and never gained traction. CD Projekt Red then decided to put more focus on Gwent, a standalone version of the collectible card game which featured in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. This has proven to be immensely popular, and could go on to challenge some of the big fantasy card offerings like Hearthstone. However, the genre is nowhere near as popular as MMO for mobile, which is why bringing back The Witcher Battle Arena could be the best way to attract more viewers to the series.

Netflix’s series is still in its early days, but the franchise potential is already clear to see. If the streaming service can get developers to create content for the mobile and iGaming markets, it will be able to boost its viewership massively.
