Note, Raph and Steve's sites were being crushed by the weight of "teh intawebz" and were unavailable while I was writing this. I noticed their comments over the weekend, but I can't fire you any quotes until they get back on their feet.
Friday I pointed you to a debatable top 10 list;
GigaOM Top 10 Most Popular MMOs
which lead to conversations about Phil White's site, MMOGdata.com and what constitutes a "game" versus what constitutes a "world" by Raph Koster, Steve Danuser, Lum and even a blogger I had never read before, but who made some sense, Cuppy.
The GigaOM list was ill-defined. "Top 10 Most Popular MMOs", where MMO means massively multiplayer online. Online what? Even without the proper definition of what the list is ranking it is flawed. Webkinz can't make a top 10 list based on size if Neopets isn't listed above it. Habbo Hotel, wha? Why not just put Facebook and MySpace on there?
The GigaOM list did one thing very well. It made people think. It was such a wacky list that many of us who write for a living felt obliged to comment on it.
