This is the first quest of four found in House Deneith, suitable for
low to mid level adventurers. They are not particularly difficult
or complex, have a wide variety of enemies to face, and are fun and
quick when done correctly. Conveniently, in each quest is an
entrance to the next quest, so if all four of the "Depth" series of
quests are taken at once, a party can conceivably enter the first quest
(Depths of Despair) and go through all four in a row.
Additionally, each quest has a street entrance near the quest giver,
allowing a party to exit and re-enter before doing the next in the
series, if they should choose to rest before continuing. The quests for
the "Depths" series are all taken at the Hammersmith inn near the gate
to the marketplace in House Deneith. The Depths of Despair quest
can be found by simply going left when exiting the inn. It is
found ahead (once taking the left) past the path leading west, at a
trapdoor.
The theme of all the quests is extermination. The Deneith sewers
have been overrun by monsters of both humanoid and other type.
The adventurer's job is to clear them out. In the Depths of
Despair quest, you goal is to defeat the humanoid who rules highest
sewer level, the troglodyte chieftain, Sslysk.

Of note is the glass spider queen. The queen does not attack
often, but quickly lays eggs which hatch as poisonous spider
soldiers. The eggs she lays can be broken (before they hatch),
but if one is close to them (such as by kicking them), you can be
poisoned. At the level you do this quest, poison can be quite
annoying, since the appropriate href="http://ddo.tentonhammer.com/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=208">spells
are not available. Best to kill the glass queen at range, and

intercept the soldiers as they approach the party. After
defeating this group, you can approach Sslysk's lair from the west.
If you should take the western route, you will have various branches
which lead south. There are violet slimes (these split with
weapons, but are vulnerable to fire). There are also rust
monsters, undead, and hell hounds to be found this way. To the
far west is a minotaur warrior in a cage. You can unlock the
cage, the minotaur will awake and attack. However, there IS a
chest here if you wish it.
South of the minotaur is a troglodyte shaman, and some allies.
Defeat them, to the south of them is another entrance to Sslysk's
lair. En route to this lair you can also reach "The Eater" a
particularly difficult normal rust monster.
However you arrive, you will eventually reach Sslysk's lair. The
lair is occupied by the Chieftain Sslysk's lair, a href="http://ddo.tentonhammer.com/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=36">troglodyte
