Last week, the fine folks working on Vanguard: Saga of Heroes roused
slumbering players with the announcement of Game Update #5 going to the
Test Server this week. There were a number of things to be excited
about including the return of a KOS (Kill On Sight) faction system,
improvements to hitching issues, multiple class changes (including the
desperately needed Psionicist update), and more.

Before the announcements were made, I'm sure the development team sat
down and considered the possible ramifications from all this. I'm also
pretty sure they were prepared for some of the backlash as well. While
there has been no shortage to be found of this, it seems that overall,
Game Update #5 is being looked forward to by a large number of players.

The number one thing that seems to have gotten people into a frenzy
(although the phrase "tizzy" may be more appropriate at times) was the
announcement that racial mounts were being added to the game. To kick
this announcement off, Vanguard's Community Representative, Ellyra,
arranged for multiple sites to show off some exclusive highlights. We
were fortunate enough to be given the chance to reveal the style="font-weight: bold;"
href="http://vanguard.tentonhammer.com/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=915">Raki
and Kurashasa mounts to the world.

Of all the mounts that were announced, it seems the Battle Lobster is
the one that has gotten the most vocal response. There are cries of
people leaving the game, people leaving to play World of Warcraft since
that's all Vanguard is becoming, etc. We've all heard these cries
before, the majority of which seem to always coincide with the
announcement of a new Game Update or some other big announcement.

I can't begin to state how shocked I am about this. Really... totally
shocked... *yawn*. As much as it pains me to say this, there will
always be people in every game that are going to cry about how they
hate the game, the developers have ruined it, and so on. I'm sorry to
see any players leave, but it's a fact of life in the gaming world. I
wish them the best in their search for happiness.

The thing that really has managed to shock me this week is the argument
about a Battle Lobster being too unrealistic. I would find it hard to
believe that I'm the only person that sees the absurdity in that
statement. That's right. A Battle Lobster is too unrealistic for the
game. Never mind the fact that I'm playing a Dark Elf Necromancer who
summons an abomination to fight for me, temporarily turns living
targets into undead targets, travels the underworld with my party to
get us to safety, and oh yeah, almost forgot... runs around killing
monsters that continually keep reappearing in ancient dungeons all
around a world called Telon. I rest my case.

If you were stuck with only choosing one mount, based solely on the
race you had chosen to play, then I promise I would be right there with
you in a line requesting that either certain mounts be changed, or to
request that it be possible to obtain a different mount. Since the
system is already set that way though, I don't understand
why players are getting so upset about this. I really don't.
Not only can you get whatever mount you want by earning faction for
that mount's particular city of origin, but you can gain multiple
mounts as well.

My biggest complaint with the racial mounts is in not being able to
decide which mount I'm going to go after first. I'm sure I'll grab the
black widow mount as a loyal dark elf first, but after that, I'm
undecided. I just know I want more of them.
