If you happen to have a thick wad of cash lying around and want to get into the business of MMORPGs, 38 Studios unfinished MMORPG codenamed Project Copernicus will soon be sold off according to court-appointed receiver Richard Land. WPRI reports that the intellectual property will be sold off via a website auction.

"The process is taking longer than we anticipated for a variety of reasons including the complexity of the game itself," Land told WPRI.com Wednesday. "We have engaged an auctioneer and they are developing an Internet marketplace – or website – to market the game."

It’s unclear exactly what the IP will bring once auctioned, but the longer Rhode Island waits the less valuable it is likely to be given that the market is already oversaturated and we’re in a transition of new tech that will power a new generation of MMORPGs. In any case, Rhode Island officials hope that the sale of the IP will help clear up some of the more than $75 million loan guarantee that the state is on the hook for following the bankruptcy of 38 Studios last year.

The story of the sale comes on the heel of news that the SEC is now also investigating the 38 Studios EDC deal.
