If you are a subscriber to Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR), you’ve probably had the chance to sample the Galactic Starfighter expansion since subscriber early access began back in December. Premium members will have the chance to join the fight on Tuesday, January 14th, 2014 when the next phase begins, and one thing that they’ll have to look forward to soon is the all new Bomber role.

Senior Game Designer Jason Attard has penned a new blog to discuss the new Bomber class and its role in the Galactic Starfighter conflict. As you may have deduced, the Bomber isn’t too fast, but it packs a massive punch.

A Bomber is big target, not fast or maneuverable enough to be very effective in a one-on-one dogfight, but never make the mistake of thinking it’s easy prey. Getting into range to shoot it usually involves threading through a deadly field of mines. If you do get in range you’ll find the Bomber can absorb a tremendous amount of punishment, and you’ll probably be taking fire from a nearby sentry drone as you try to whittle down its shields. Finally, if the Bomber starts to run, following too closely will likely lead to an explosive meeting with a mine.

Bombers come with heavy shields and armor, and while they maneuver slower than other craft, they also come packed with an assortment of mines, drones, and other systems to give pursuing starfighters a really bad day. Drones can be deployed by bombers to guard areas or repair ally ships. Tap that on to a few special abilities and you have yourself a new ship role. If all that sounds like fun, you can read Attard’s full blog for more.
