2013 was a big year for Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV). After recovering from its initial launch and finally relaunching as FFXIV: A Realm Reborn back in August, Square Enix continued to chip away at post-relaunch issues and eventually launching the 2.1: A Realm Awoken update back in December. But the past is the past and it’s time to look to the future.

One of the first things that players can expect to see for 2014 is the PlayStation 4 beta. FFXIV beta testing on the platform is set to coincide with its Japan launch on February 22nd, 2014 with a release planned the following April.

But the PS4 launch isn’t the only thing in the works. Development on the 2.2 update is also in full swing and Leviathan is about to unleash his fury on Eorzea. Fury aside, Yoshida offered one more pebble of teasing information by stating that the keyword for update 2.2 is "Maelstrom." Have fun with that.

Yoshida closed out his New Year’s update with a passage from the journal of an Eorzean hero.

Lances of light herald the dawn,

Beckoning shadows deeper still.

Splendor dances with shades

Unsheathed, a rime kissed blade

Spills crimson o'er fields of white.

- From the journal of Louisoix Leveilleur

In addition to Yoshida's latest update, FFXIV also kicked off a new holiday event yesterday with Heavensturn. Read all about it on the FFXIV website.
