Zenimax Online Studios boss Matt Firor recently sat down for a chat with Games Industry International to talk about The Elder Scrolls Online, which Firor curiously referred to as an online RPG when questioned about the target audience and some of the fan backlash regarding the game's announcement, seeming to almost take a step back from the MMO label.
MMO is a tired expression. It is an online RPG and we designed it to be a great game.
Firor continued on in the interview to talk about the design of The Elder Scrolls Online, which currently has a team of about 250, and how the Zenimax/Bethesda writing teams are cooperating to help keep the continuity of The Elder Scrolls saga united.
One other topic that may interest some players regards the evolution of game consoles and perhaps a possible platform expansion if the tech is right. While Firor didnt confirm nor deny that The Elder Scrolls Online will make an appearance on a console, he did discuss how the lines between PCs and consoles are blurring and thus the possibility for more MMO-style games to make the jump could happen. When asked about a possible console version, Firor responded:
That is a very long answer, as there are a lot of rumors swirling around the next-gen coming back together with PCs. I haven't seen any of that, but I read all the rumor sites just like everyone else. It seems like things are going back to a more standard platform.
For now, the PC still remains the dominate platform for MMOGs. You can read Firors full interview at Games Industry International for more.
