In the third of our Patreon exclusive content, Jeremy Waxman talks about the substitute system in League Of Legends. We've pulled out the opening extract from the article below and if you'd like to carry on reading it, head on over to our Patreon: it costs as little as $1 per month.

Before the start of Season 5, a huge change was made in competitive League of Legends. The rules were amended to state that one owner (or ownership group) could not have more than one team in any of the major leagues. For the NA/EU LCS, this meant the rebranding of Evil Geniuses and Alliance as Winterfox and Elements/respectively. In those leagues, that was the only real effect. However, elsewhere in the world, the new rule had a much more significant impact. Organizations such as SK Telecom, Jin Air, CJ Entus, and others used the “sister team” system, where they owned two teams that competed in the same league. Aside from (hypothetically) giving the owners an extra chance at having a team that did well, it also meant at least one scrim partner was always available. This system had been in place for a while, and eliminating it certainly had consequences.
