The Elder Scrolls Online Won’t Require PS Plus, But Does Require Xbox Gold

One question that’s been asked since it was revealed that The Elder Scrolls Online (TESO) would be making its way to the latest generation of PlayStation and Xbox consoles is whether or not players would need to subscribe to each console’s respective premium service – PlayStation Plus and Xbox Gold. Given that TESO is already a subscription-based MMORPG, this might be a turn off for some players.

TESO Game Director Matt Firor recently posted a PlayStation Blog in which he answered a round of questions submitted by fans via Twitter. His very first response finally answers he subscription question.

“A PlayStation Plus membership is not required to play The Elder Scrolls Online. PS4 players will only be required to pay the same monthly subscription associated with The Elder Scrolls Online that PC and Mac users will pay—nothing more.”

While PlayStation 4 players are off the hook for the double subscription, Xbox One players aren’t so lucky. Game Informer recently contacted Bethesda to ask the same question, and the response was pretty much the opposite. A Bethesda rep confirmed that Xbox One players will need to have both a TESO subscription and an Xbox Gold subscription to play the MMORPG on the console.

In addition to the subscription news, Firor fielded several other questions in the blog on the topics of PS4 controls, use of the Dual Shock 4's touchpad, and group/solo play. Firor also confirmed that US and EU servers will be separate and not one unified megaserver.

TESO is scheduled to launch for PC on April 4th, 2014. The MMORPG will release for both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 the following June.
