Warhammer Online’s 5th anniversary doesn’t bring the celebratory news that players may have been hoping for. Mythic today announced that Warhammer Online will officially be shuttered on December 18th, 2013, bringing an end to the MMORPG just over five years after its official launch. At that time, the licensing deal with Games Workshop will come to an end, once again serving as a fine example of why original IP MMORPGs are the way to go. Licensing deals will always be a problem when our favorite MMORPGs get older, leading to their inevitable cancellation.
The closure announcement states:
Greetings Warhammer Online Subscribers,
We here at Mythic have built an amazing relationship working with Games Workshop creating and running Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning over the last 8 years. Unfortunately, as with all licensing deals they do eventually come to end and on December 18th, 2013 we will no longer be operating Warhammer Online. As such we will no longer be selling 3 month game time codes or have the ability to auto renew your accounts for 3 months as of September 18th, 2013. If you would like to read some additional thoughts from one of WAR’s Producer please check out http://www.warhammeronline.com/. From all of us here at Mythic we thank you again for your dedication and support over the last five years.
If you have any questions please feel free contact us via email at [email protected].
Waaagh!
Warhammer Team
Rounding out the announcement is a new Producer’s Letter from Carrie Gouskos, who reflects on her time as Warhammer Online producer and thanked fans for their support over the years. In the meantime, if you would like to experience the world of Warhammer Online once again, you should head back onto the field and enjoy the war before it comes to a close on December 18th.
