In a world where most of our daily transactions may in fact be
online, privacy has become a very important concern for many.
Inevitably this privacy gets breached whether deliberate or not, and
this week it looks like Turbine was the focus of many angered gamers
who may have lost some of their privacy. Read about today in href="http://www.tentonhammer.com/loading/2010/apr/14">Loading...

News reporter Martuk found a bit of information yesterday that had many
gamers up in arms. A potential href="http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/83329">breach of
privacy had possibly made its way into free-to-play giant, style="font-style: italic;">Dungeons & Dragons
Online: Eberron Unlimited.

To recap, Turbine has launched the href="http://www.ddo.com/news/957-get-more-free-turbine-points-with-new-offer-wall">DDO
Offer Wall which allows players to earn Turbine points for
activities like filling out a survey. As the game's popularity
continues to grow daily this new addition could prove to be a welcome
choice for many gamers who either don't wish to or otherwise cannot
spend a lot of money in microtransactions. A setup like this style="font-style: italic;">could be a win/win
for everyone but it appears that one of the partners appearing in the
offer may has already begun to take advantage. The Super Rewards
company who are involved in the Offer Wall feature may have been
collecting information such as players' account names and email
addresses. There's no confirmation on the matter yet, but Turbine has
taken the Super Rewards option out of the offer to href="http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?p=2893059#post2893059">investigate
the matter.

Obviously, if this information turns out to be correct, Turbine may
have a bigger problem on their hands in that consumer trust may have
been damaged. One prevalent theme we encounter on forums and websites
concerning gamers' overall hesitation of free-to-play games is that
they often don't feel their information is secure. While Turbine does
hold a clean record of maintaing customer privacy and security an
incident like this may set them back from reaching a
potentially large segment of the consumer base. Even though we have
been href="http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?p=2893254#post2893254">asssured
that the database has not been compromised, even a rumor of
privacy being breached is a hard blow to any company which relies
solely on online transactions.

To make matters worse, there were several questionable offers that got
through the initial screening process of the Offer Wall. These offers,
too, have been removed, but coupled with the potential privacy issues,
it's safe to say that the launch of the Offer Wall has been less than a
resounding success. We'll keep you updated at Ten Ton Hammer as we
learn more.

Humor:
The MMOG Development Talent Tree

I've
got to admit that when I read Stow's satirical take applying a
WoW-esque talent tree to the process of MMOG development I chuckled at
his insight. Here's an example:

My Mom Can Play This
-
The game is
optimized to the point that it can be played on a 10 year old Gateway
desktop,
on a 56k connection, and by someone with the reflexes of a zombie.
Performance,
net code, and latency are all in perfect harmony. 1 point talent.

Effects: Available
Player Pool
increased to the maximum, 95%. The remainder are playing Farmville or
Mafia
Wars on Facebook and cannot be wooed, as they have lost their souls to
browser-based games. Until the studio can develop the /facebook
command, the
maximum player base will elude them.
