Guide to Ranger Feats

Feats 11-20

By Nuitaran

A rating of 1 or 2 means the Feat is pretty much
useless to a ranger and one that you probably want to avoid. A rating
of 3 indicates that the Feat can be used with some careful planning or with certain class combinations. We reserve a rating of 4 only
for those Feats that are almost necessary picks for certain types of builds or class combinations. A rating of 5 designates the best of the ranger Feats and ones
players should seriously consider in any href="http://ddo.tentonhammer.com/index.php?meid=5#Builds">DDO build
involving rangers.

11. Eschew Materials
Official Text: “While this metamagic feat is active, spells are more damaging, but they consume additional spell points.”

Prerequisite: Able to cast spells

Comments: Ranger components are cheap, and their spells are trivial enough not to have to worry about it if you run out in mid adventure.  Waste of a Feat.

Rating: 1

style="vertical-align: top; background-color: rgb(219, 201, 125);">

12. Exotic Weapon Proficiency
Official Text: "You do not suffer a -4 attack penalty for using one or more of the exotic weapons."

Prerequisite: Base Attack Bonus +1, STR 13 for Dwarven Waraxe or Bastard Sword

Comments: The only Exotic Weapon that some Rangers might find handy is the Repeating Crossbow.  I have seen some Ranger builds use this to great effect, but keep in mind, many of a Rangers “free” archery Feats do not apply to a crossbow such as Manyshot, Bow Strength, and Rapid Shot.

Rating: 2

13. Extend Spell
Official Text: “While this metamagic feat is active, spells with durations last longer, but they consume additional spell points.

Prerequisite: Able to cast spells

Comments: Rangers don’t use enough spells for this to be too useful, and with their limited amount of Spell Points, increasing casting cost can make their spellcasting even more useless.

Rating: 1

style="vertical-align: top; background-color: rgb(219, 201, 125);">

14. Great Cleave
Official Text: "Activate this ability to attack one or more enemies in a wider arc than Cleave."

Prerequisite: Cleave, Base Attack Bonus +4

Comments: Leave it to the Fighters--enough said.

Rating: 1

15. Great Fortitude
Official Text: "Grants you a +2 bonus on your Fortitude saves."

Comments: A Rangers Fortitude save should be moderate. If someone really wants to enforce them this is a good way, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

Rating: 2

style="vertical-align: top; background-color: rgb(219, 201, 125);">

16. Greater Two Handed Fighting
Official Text: “Allows you to make additional glancing blow attacks when wielding a two-handed weapon and moving, and late in your chain of attacks.

Prerequisite: Strength 17, Base Attack Bonus +11, Improved Two Handed Fighting,

Comments: I think I might cry a little if I saw a Ranger with a Two-Hander.  Leave this to the heavy hitters, Rangers make better support combatants.

Rating: 1

17. Greater Two Weapon Fighting
Official Text: “Increases the number of attacks when fighting with two weapons.”

Prerequisite: Two Weapon Fighting, Improved Two Weapon Fighting, Base Attack Bonus +11, Dex 17, Received by Ranger 11

Comments: You are going to get this one for free if you take 11 levels of Ranger.  For Fighter Multiclass builds who will not have that many Ranger levels and wish to focus on Two Weapon Fighting this could be a good choice as a Feat, but leave it out if you ever plan on having 11 Ranger levels.  Think to the future, the cap could go up sooner than we think!

Rating: 2

style="vertical-align: top; background-color: rgb(219, 201, 125);">

18. Greater Weapon Focusbattle
Official Text: "Provides a +1 bonus to attack rolls when using [weapons of the specified type]. This bonus stacks with the Weapon Focus feat. "

Prerequisite: Fighter Level 8, Base Attack Bonus +8, Weapon Focus of the type to be chosen

Comments: For a Ranger with only a few Ranger levels and 8 or more Fighter Levels, I would definitely recommend this one.  Sadly, full Rangers won’t be able to take it due to Prerequisites that differ from Pen and Paper.

Rating: 4

19. Heavy Armor Proficiency
Official Text: “You are proficient with heavy armor, and do not suffer armor penalties to your attack rolls when wearing heavy armor.”

Prerequisite: Armor Proficiency: Medium

Comments: Spending two Feats to get this isn’t the best idea when you can get it for taking one level of Fighter.

Rating: 1

style="vertical-align: top; background-color: rgb(219, 201, 125);"> style="font-weight: bold;">

20. Improved Critical
Official Text: "Doubles your critical hit range when using the selected weapon. Applies to a single weapon type. May be taken multiple times, each time applying to a different weapon type."

Prerequisite: Base Attack Bonus +8

Comments: Taking Improved Critical: Ranged could be an excellent idea for a Ranger who focuses on Ranged Combat.

Rating: 5
