Guide to Ranger Feats

Feats 61-68

By Nuitaran

A rating of 1 or 2 means the Feat is pretty much
useless to a ranger and one that you probably want to avoid. A rating
of 3 indicates that the Feat can be used with some careful planning or with certain class combinations. We reserve a rating of 4 only
for those Feats that are almost necessary picks for certain types of builds or class combinations. A rating of 5 designates the best of the ranger Feats and ones
players should seriously consider in any href="http://ddo.tentonhammer.com/index.php?meid=5#Builds">DDO build
involving rangers.

61. Tower Shield Proficiency
Official Text: “You are proficient with tower shields.”

Prerequisite: Shield Proficiency: General

Comments: Personally I’m not a big fan of Tower Shields.  I know that some people swear by them, and if you are one, maybe you can find a way to squeeze this one in.  I don’t think the Attack penalty is worth it.

Rating: 2

62. Two Handed Fighting
Official Text: "Increases the chance of glancing blows when wielding a two-handed weapon."

Prerequisite: Strength 15

Comments: I say again, Rangers have better options that swinging "ginormous" axes around and generating massive aggro.

Rating: 1

63. Two Weapon Blocking
Official Text: "Increases the amount of damage you can block when defending with two weapons."

Prerequisite: Two Weapon Fighting

Comments: If you’re going to go dual wielding, this is one of the Feats you should consider, but Two Weapon Defense is far more useful.

Rating: 3

64. Two Weapon Defense
Official Text: "Grants you a +1 bonus to your AC when you wield two weapons."

Prerequisite: Two Weapon Fighting

Comments: This is a great way to utilize a Rangers Two Weapon Fighting prowess without sacrificing as much AC.  Don’t go thinking you can Tank with two weapons once you have this though, you still want to watch your aggro so you don’t become a DPS Spell Point Sponge.

Rating: 5

65. Two Weapon Fighting
Official Text: “Reduces the penalty for fighting with two weapons.”

Prerequisite: Dexterity 15, Received at Ranger Level 2

Comments: You are going to get this one free for just two levels of Ranger, so taking it would be silly if that’s in your plan.

Rating: 1

style="vertical-align: top; background-color: rgb(219, 201, 125);">

66. Weapon Finesse
Official Text: "You use your Dexterity bonus instead of Strength bonus to determine bonus to attack with one or more of the weapons below."

Prerequisite: Base Attack Bonus +1

Comments: If your Ranger has a much higher DEX than STR, this might be a good idea. Even if you still elect to use a Longsword or Battleaxe in your main hand, Finesse will apply to light offhand weapons.  Dual wielding Kukri’s with Weapon Finesse is a popular choice.

Weapons included in Weapon Finesse: Dagger, Handaxe, Kama, Kukri, Light Hammer, Light Mace, Light Pick, Rapier, Short Sword, and Sickle.

Rating: 4

67. Weapon FocusVisslaer
Official Text: "Provides a +1 bonus to attack rolls when using [weapons of the specified type]."

Prerequisite: Base Attack Bonus +1

Comments: Most people would think to take this in Ranged Weapons, but if you have a high DEX, and a moderate STR, without Weapon Finesse, think about taking it to boost a weak melee attack bonus.  I am taking it in a melee type for my newest Ranger because he fires his bow with a +18 but only gets a +12 with his favorite axe.

Rating: 5

68. Whirlwind Attack

Official Text: "Activate this ability to attack all enemies in a 360 degree arc around you."

Prerequisite: Base Attack Bonus +4, Combat Expertise, Spring Attack (Dodge, Mobility)

Comments: It just takes too many Feats to get here for a Ranger. That makes me sad.  I love this Feat.
