TOWNS AND QUEST HUBS

These are the towns, camps and other assorted places where
players can pick up quests. Level range describes the optimum level
range for XP gain. Important NPCs are those who bestow quest chains or
are crucial to the epic storyline, with position coordinates listed if
located outside the main hub. Description is a broad guideline of what
to expect from each quest hub without going into too specific of detail.

The
burned-out, smoking remains of a backwater town: where all epic
adventures start.

ARCHET

Level Range: 5-7

Important NPCs: Jon Brackenbrook,
Constable Thistlewool, Atli Spider-bane, Cal Sprigley,
Builder Earur

Town Services

  • Race of Man class trainers (Burglar, Captain, Champion,
    Guardian, Hunter, Lore-master, Minstrel, Warden)
  • Provisioner
  • Supplier
  • Light & Medium Armoursmith
  • Weapon Trader
  • Bowyer
  • Mailbox
  • Milestone
  • Barter Exchange Trader for new-character barter items

Description: The charred remains
of Archet are where you really start your adventuring career. The mobs
are still weak here, but it's in the same space as the rest of the game
and most of the hand-holding is done. Players can easily burn through
the spider-slayer and brigand-slayer deeds here early
on by killing lots of weak mobs. Don't expect much from quest rewards -
anything you craft when you get to Combe will be superior. Be sure to
hit up Bronwe's Folly and Blackwold Roost while you're here, and get
the Ancient Cairn at the south end of Blackwold Roost - doing this now
means you won't have to backtrack later on. Brackenbrook will get you
started on the epic storyline prologue, which you can do regardless of
race at any level. Tear through this area quickly, there's a lot more
game to discover.

Don't
be fooled by the enormous size - the Comb and Wattle Inn has only 1
room, and it's occupied.

COMBE

Level Range: 7 - 10

Important NPCs: Constable
Sageford, Constable Underhill, Constable Wren, Gail Catchpole, Maida
Woodwright, Lizbeth Honeymeade

Town Services

  • Light & Medium Armoursmith
  • One-handed & Two-handed Weaponsmith
  • Bowyer
  • Tavern Keep
  • Stable-master (South Bree, Thorin's Gate, Celondim, Michel
    Delving)
  • Milestone
  • Mailbox
  • Bard
  • Clerk of Kinships
  • All class trainers
  • Crafting hall with novice suppliers and normal work areas
  • Workbench (at Combe Lumber Camp)

Description: Following the epic storyline
prologue takes you to Combe, starting at the Comb and Wattle Inn and
carrying on into Chetwood and beyond to deal with the Blackwold
bandits.
Most quests here require running to Chetwood to kill stuff. Players
hsould be able to find ample materials to advance their crafts a bit
and make themselves some half-decent low-level gear that is superior to
quest rewards, though scholar nodes are in short supply (there are a
few in Blackwold Headquarters). Once you run out of quests here, head
south to Staddle.

  • Fishing Supplier
  • Novice Farmhand (31.0S, 48.7W)
  • Farmland and Workbench (just south of the Novice Farmhand
and surrounding Gammy Bogg's farm to the east)

Description: Just south down the
road from Combe is the Hobbit village called Staddle. This is a quiet,
simple town mostly untouched by the events only a few minutes to the
north,  and is populated by incredibly lazy Hobbits. Expect to
be asked to fetch things from neighbors 2 houses over and to do chores.
Falco Greenhand has slightly bigger problems with bandits from the
south. Some quests will send you into Midgewater Marsh.

Description: The central hub in
Eriador, which all characters must pass through at some point.
Quest-givers are spread out throughout the town, and there are not all
that many that start in Bree despite the size of the place. Most
quest-givers have been de-centralized to outlying locations. Strider
and Gandalf can be found in their rooms at the Prancing Pony, but only
during their portions of Volume I Book 1 of the epic storyline.
Barliman Butterbur is the innkeeper at the Prancing Pony and has his
fingers in many pies.
