Armor Edition

Medium-armor characters in the
Lord of the Rings Online
fill a variety of roles.
The Hunter is arguably the most popular DPS
class in the game; the Burglar is a rather
unique hybrid class that can fill a DPS or support role with
aplomb; and the Warden is one of the strongest
soloing classes as well as being a sound tank. Though the Warden
might be better off equipping the same virtues as the
heavy-armor crowd (as detailed in LotRO
Deeds & Virtues: Heavy Armor Edition
), the hybrid
nature of the class means it will benefit from having an
alternate setup as well. The bulk of this guide will focus more
on Hunters and Burglars.

LotRO Deeds & Virtues - Medium Armor Edition - Burglar from stealth

style="float: right; margin-left: 10px;" />Despite the variety
of roles, Hunters and Burglars have a set of common needs:

  • They are not front-line fighters, relying on tanks to hold
the enemy at bay while they snipe from range or stab from the
flanks. Ideally, they shouldn't end up bearing the brunt of an
enemy assault, but should have some defense against physical
attacks just in case. A high Vitality score
means the Hunter or Burglar has enough morale to survive the
occasional accident, such as when an aggressive play-style
causes the tanks to lose aggro.
  • Damage output is determined by Agility.
This affects Ranged Offense rating for Hunters, and Melee
Offense rating for Burglars. Since these classes do even more
damage with critical hits, Fate is also
important. Burglars in particular will want high Fate, since
scoring critical hits unlocks a skill chain.
  • Might is a dump-stat for Hunters and
Burglars. Hunters determine their Melee Offense rating with
Might, but most Hunters will be focused primarily on Ranged
Offense. For Wardens, Might is a necessity.

Hunters and Burglars will often use many of the same virtues,
particularly the ones that stack Agility and Vitality. Wardens,
being front-line fighters, will require a more balanced setup
with more emphasis on Might than Hunters or Burglars need.

Deeding with a Hunter is a lot easier than with some other
classes. With a broad assortment of area-effect skills and
wickedly-high DPS, slayer deeds just seem to melt away. And with
the increased run speed buff from Find The Path
and the instant travels from Wayfaring skills, exploration deeds
are fast and relatively painless. Doing slayer deeds with a
Burglar requires a bit more patience, however: their DPS is
lower than the Hunter's, they have few ranged attacks (except
with crafted class items) and no area-effect damage skills.
While slayer deeds might take a bit more time for a Burglar,
they are potentially less hazardous - mezzes and stealth count
for a lot. And exploration deeds in the more dangerous,
high-level areas can be completed using stealth. Wardens will
fall somewhere in between the two - they don't have the DPS of
Hunters, but can take on many mobs at once for slayer deeds, and
the various Muster skills make exploration deeds pretty easy.

DPS Focus: Agility, Fate

Hunters are a fairly narrowly-focused class; their primary goal
is dealing high ranged damage, which is based on Agility and, to
a lesser extent, Fate. In solo play, jacked-up Agility means the
Hunter is more likely to be able to finish an enemy off from
great range before it ever draws close enough to be really
dangerous. Burglars, on the other hand, have a broader spectrum
of talents, but their DPS is also primarily based on Agility.
High Fate allows Burglars to use their critical hit response
chain skills more often. Wardens use Agility to affect their
critical hit rating, and to do more damage with javelins skills,
and having a high Fate score means higher in-combat power and
morale regeneration, which helps with long tanking sessions.

Recommend: Determination, Tolerance,
Mercy, Idealism, Empathy

Survivability Focus: Vitality, Defense

High Vitality is desirable for every class - it affects total
morale, morale regeneration out of combat and mitigation against
physical damage. Hunters and Burglars are not designed to take a
massive beating like the heavy-armor guys, but there are many
occasions when they have to take a few hits. This factors in
more heavily during solo play, where the character is facing
mobs one-on-one (or several-on-one), and an extra chunk of
morale and increased defenses can spell the difference between
victory and defeat.

Recommend: Loyalty, Fidelity,
Innocence, Valour

Balancing It Out: Power, More Defense

Late-game gear tends to very heavily focus on Agility and
Vitality for medium armor. Gear with Will and Power tends to
also have tactical offense boosts, which is useless for Hunters
and Burglars, and items that increase your defense are generally
tailored to heavy-armor classes. It's usually an either-or
situation - either you use an item that increases your power
pool/defense or you use one that affects your main stats and
nothing else. Using a few stop-gap virtues can make you less
squishy overall, and will prevent you from zeroing out your
power after a few skill uses.

Recommend: Wisdom, Honesty,
Zeal, Compassion, Charity

Determination

Deed

A must-have for Hunters and
other Agility-based characters, this one also offers a
nice chunk of in-combat morale regeneration and a dash

Mercy

Deed
Value
Where

to Go

This one is harder to justify.
If you really need to max out your Agility, the tiny
boost from Mercy might be your thing. Typically, Hunters
and Burglars are not known for being merciful, but the
few who are have ended a lot of suffering by slaying the
undead. (Top)

Idealism

Will. Idealism comes from a lot of lore-based deeds and
a little bit of killing. (Top)

Loyalty

Deed
Value
Where

Fidelity

Deed
Value
Where

to Go

If Vitality is a priority,
this virtue is okay. The boost to tactical mitigation
makes it excellent if you plan on fighting anything that
uses fire, shadow, lightning or cold-based attacks.
Fidelity is earned largely through exploration deeds,
but there are a few slayer deeds in the mix as well. (

Valour

Deed
Value
Where

to Go

There's simply no arguing
against the big chunk of morale that this virtue adds.
Extra non-combat morale regeneration means less downtime
between fights, and there's a sniff of Might thrown in
for flavor. Be ready to kill a lot of orcs, goblins,
trolls and worms. (Top)
