In 1994 a little movie hit theaters known as Stargate. The movie starred Kurt Russell as the uptight military colonel, Jack O’Neil, with James Spader taking on the role of the archeologist and linguistic expert Daniel Jackson. In the theatrical release of Stargate, the crew discovers that the Stargate allows the instantaneous travel to other worlds, the first of which Jackson cracks the code for, prompting an exploratory group to go through the gate for the first time. Spoilers being avoided, you should see it for yourself.

The band is back together for Stargate Unleashed.

While the theatrical movie garnered mixed reviews, Showtime took an interest in the series and partnered with MGM to develop a new series based on the Stargate universe with Stargate SG-1, which debuted its first episode in 1997 with the charismatic Richard Dean Anderson taking on the role as Colonel Jack O’Neill, with two Ls, something Anderson’s character jokes over in a Season 2 episode (Secrets) in which he clarifies to a reporter that his name is spelled with the extra L as there is another O’Neil in the Air Force, musing that he has no sense of humor at all, a nod to Kurt Russell's more serious portrayal of the character. A nice touch and all stuff that I didn't need to look up, which should be a testament to my Stargate geekdom.

Stargate SG-1 had a very successful for 10 season run and led to two other spin-off shows with Stargate: Atlantis and the less-popular and early-cancelled Stargate: Universe along with two direct-to-DVD movies based on the SG-1 series (Stargate: Arc of the Truth, Stargate: Continuum) and the Stargate Infinity animated series.

While the television and movie side of Stargate has been successful, the attempts to bring it to gaming fans have, to put it mildly, usually been met with sheer and utter disaster of an almost biblical apocalyptic nature. The bad began with the early cancellation of Stargate SG-1: Alliances and escalated to the disasters that were Stargate: Resistance and Stargate Worlds from Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment. If you’re curious to learn more about that train wreck on the rails of humanity, you can browse all of our previous stories from that time that would have even made Apophis shake his head in shame.

Now that we made it through that depressing bit of news, we can look ahead to something positive thanks to Arkalis Interactive, who this week announced that the first of their new episodic adventure title, Stargate SG-1: Unleashed, is now available on for Android devices via Google Play, something we usually don’t cover but figured it was worth a mention to our scorned Stargate fans. While this is, unfortunately, a tablet/mobile game, it does come with some high points that will make most any Stargate fan squee. Arkalis managed to get the band back together to lend their voices to the game with the full original cast of the SG-1 team returning to reprise their roles with Richard Dean Anderson (Colonel Jack O’Neill), Amanda Tapping (Captain Samantha Carter), Michael Shanks (Dr. Daniel Jackson), and Christopher Judge (Teal’c) to take on a new threat from the series top villains, the Goa’uld.

The game is available this week for the discounted price of $2.99 and will return to its full price of $4.99 after June 16th. So if you’re up for one more journey with the crew from SG-1, head over and check it out. Stargate SG-1: Unleashed is also available for iOS devices and on Amazon.
