Update Preview

Game Director Craig 'Silirrion' Morrison addressed the community recently to share some of the information in the next update for AoC. The changes have generated a lot of discussion as the PvP Notoriety system, tradeskill changes, and GUI Add-ons will be making their way to live servers.

shortening combo length?!

The decision to shorten the combo attack lengths has been a controversial one. Yakomo dropped into this heavily discussed thread to provide some reasoning as to why this change has been made on the Testlive servers.

Whiffing Penalty:

This penalty to your combo finisher damage for ‘hitting air’ on the sequence steps was introduced due to the fact that a lot of damage was back-loaded into the combo finisher. This allowed the ‘pre-loading’ of combos, then rushing in to try to hit with the finisher and deal massive damage. The opposing player could be caught unaware by this and, for some classes, this damage was enough to kill them outright. Thus, the Whiffing Penalty came about.

However, we did not want to penalize the players who miss one attack in a sequence due to lag or any other uncontrollable factors. Therefore, we lowered the scaling of the whiffing penalty from 15%, 30%, 45% to 5%, 20%, 45% per missed attack.

This type of linear progression, however, could scale out of hand in the case of a 5-step combo and cause less damage to be dealt than just regular swings. This led us to the next step, Combo Step Reductio.

Game Director Craig 'Silirrion' Morrison addressed some concerns about the new Notoriety system.

Benefit of being a Murderer?

With the PvP Notoriety system nearing completion there have been a lot of question getting asked about how this system will be handled when it comes to potential griefing. Some players are concerned that a lower level player can attack a higher level and the higher level may get murder points for simply defending themselves. Game Director Craig 'Silirrion' Morrison dropped in to clarify how this system will work and put some of these concerns to rest.

This will be accounted for by the system. We have gone to lengths to ensure that we have closed off as many of the obvious roads for 'griefing' with this system as we can. Lower level players will have to be actively targeted by a higher level target to have them generate murder points. A lower level actively attacking a higher level players first will flag them as 'free prey' for the higher level player and they can kill them at will without fear of gaining any negative impact. The team have done a lot of work to ensure this system is as smooth as we can make it.

As to the original poster, this isn't a system to reward this kind of behavior. It is a system where someone who consciously chooses to be 'that' type of player isn't disallowed from doing so, but has to live with the consequences of doing so without having his normal game-play completely removed. We do not wish to reward that kind of game-play. It's about choices for the player, if they choose to be notorious rather than a good citizen they are allowed to do so (Hyboria is a brutal world after all!), the results are negative though, it's up to each individual whether they can live with that life as an outlaw and murderer. I am sure some will!

No halloween event?

Seasonal events have become an MMOG past time tradition. Funcom has not announced how or if they will be having seasonal events in the world of Hyboria. This week a wayward group of forum goers got this discussion started about the possibility of seeing something for Halloween. What are your thoughts on seasonal events and do you think Funcom will or even should have a Halloween event for AoC?

I'm sure most of us have swung a baseball bat at one time or another. Given that we probably all understand what happens when you ht something with a bat. In most cases a ball, but what happens when you try to hit say, a piano? A smart person might say there is a way to do it carefully. The less brighter might say, duh huh, bat...me bash... Enjoy this little mishap that I call...
