LotRO Guide to Scholarship

By Anna "Morvelaira" Dotson

While the items a Scholar makes may not be used by every player in the
game, they all provide some special benefit to a player without
fail.  Whether it helps an adventurer ward off attacks, a crafter
chase that ever elusive critical, or any player make their clothes just
that much prettier, every item is useful.  Leveling Scholar can be
a time and money intensive process, but once you have leveled the skill
there is much gold to be had.  You could make a steady living off
of Hunters alone with your higher tier oils and bow chants.  A
nice supplementary income will come from dyes and wall-paints as well,
since there seems to be a href="http://lotro.tentonhammer.com/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=690">vibrant
community of decorators around the servers.

Vocation Choice

If you're going to be a Scholar, there's only one Vocation for you:

Historian (Farmer/Scholar/Weaponsmith) - This is actually a pretty target="blank"
href="http://lotro.tentonhammer.com/modules.php?set_albumName=album71&id=Craft_Scholar_Complete_Proficiency_Tier_4&op=modload&name=Gallery&file=index&include=view_photo.php">self-sufficient
set up as a vocation.  Most Scholar materials are ground spawns
that are foraged throughout the land.  Those that aren't are
either vendor-bought or grown through farming (for dyes and
wall-paints).  This relationship has become even more symbiotic
since the release of Book 14, with the advent of new dye/wall-paint
colors and new farmables to supply those colors.  While the
Weaponsmith does throw a wrench in the self-sufficiency idea, if you
level Scholar and Farming first, you'll be able to afford any and all
of the ore you need easily.

Scholar Product Types

There are 8 different kinds of href="http://lotro.tentonhammer.com/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=635">products
for Scholars to make:

  • Battle and Warding Lore - These are scrolls Scholars make to give
adventurer's a buff in battle.  Battle Lore will increase a
party's offensive prowess, while a Warding Lore will increase a party's
    defensive capabilities.
  • Books - These are equipable items that are Loremaster specific,
giving a buff to one of their major skills as long as the book is
    equipped.
  • Bow Chants - These are consumable items that are Hunter specific,
giving various buffs to a Hunter's bow attacks.
  • Crafting Lore - These scrolls will give a crafter a short time
bonus to making a critical.  They're profession-specific though,
so don't expect that Scroll of Tailoring Lore to give you a better
    chance to crit that longsword!
  • Dyes - These are clothing and Armor Dyes of various colors.
  • Oils - These are consumable items that are Hunter specific,
giving buffs to a Hunter's ranged skills.
  • Potions - These are Morale and Power potions, the same as can be
found dropped off of mobs often.
  • Wall-Paint - These are various colors of paint to change the
    design of your house!

Crafting Quests

Some of these quests will send you into dangerous territory, however
they were all able to be completed by a level 30 character who ran
really, really fast!

2. Collect the Lost Stanza of Aiglos from Annundir in the North Downs.

To aid you in your scholarly pursuits, Nathronwen has decided you
should compose a ballad tracing the story of Aiglos. She gave you a
recipe of instructions and her notes to aid you with collecting sources.

(Author's Note: The Ballad can
be made using a Scholar's Satchel found at 7.8S, 49.6W in Annundir of
the North Downs.  Unfortunately, level 24 wargs patrol the
hillside there.  You will also need 3 Cryptic Text and 1 Ruined
Second Age Trinket to
create the Ballad of Aiglos).

several stacks of books lost when creatures in the Lone-lands spooked
the horses pulling a waggon bound for Imladris.

Harry Wheelwright is at the stables of Imladris.

Deluros has asked that you speak with Harry Wheelwright, a
waggon-driver currently staying in Imladris, about his ill-fated drive
through the Lone-lands.

2. Retrieve the books from the southern bog in the Lone-lands.

The waggon left the road through the Lone-lands and barrelled into the
southern bog, shedding books as it went.

Deluros has asked you to recover four stacks of books that mark the
trail of the missing waggon that likely ended its journey somewhere in
the southern bog.

Final Note

When considering a scholar, you have to wonder if you're willing to put
in the time necessary.  Whether you're finding your ingredients on
your own, or just buying them at the Auction Hall, it's going to take a
large amount of time to GrandMaster Scholar.  Some people say that
it's best to have a high level character than can supply your Scholar
with money for leveling, but if you're willing to put in the grind to
level without money, a Scholar can be used to supply any number of
character with the money they'll need for their goals.  Scholar is
a very useful profession, you just have to be smart about it! (ha ha!
Pun intended!)
