The Zones of Northrend

All information contained is in reference to the World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King expansion pack which is yet to be released. Therefore the information may or may not change at any given time in the near future. A lot of the information contained within may also be speculation based on various books and things we know about the Warcraft universe.

In total there are nine new outdoor zones dedicated to leveling up, one new outdoor PvP zone dedicated to nothing but PvP, and Dalaran which will most then likely be a zone of its own (located in the sky). In similar to fashion to The Burning Crusade you will find the zones gradually take you up in level with plenty of quests and instances to keep you company on the way to level seventy.

Howling Fjord (68-72)

The Howling Fjord is located in the south east part of Northrend and is where the Human campaign took place in Warcraft III. The Howling Fjord will be home of the first instance that adventurers will encounter called Utgarde Keep.  The major enemy of the area is called the vrykul who will be constantly raiding the towns of Valgarde (Alliance) and New Agamand (Horde).

This is one of the low level introduction zones. There are two (Howling Fjord and Borean Tundra) and will take a player to level seventy two without the need of visiting the other zone.

Borean Tundra (68-72)

The Borean Tundra is located on the far west side of Northrend and is home of the Tuskarr who are the main theme of the zone. It will contain the city of Warsong Hold led by Mag’hari (son of Grom) and will have allied with the Tuskarr. It’s assumed that a gnomish settlement for the alliance will be located here.

Like the Howling Fjord this zone will be one of the two primary introduction zones to the expansion and will be very much like Hellfire Peninsula.

The Dragonblight (71-75)

The Dragonblight will be located in the south central section of Northrend and will be directly connected to the Bogrean Tundra. It will house the entrance to Azjol-Nerub and facilitate the majority of adventuring through levels 71-75. It’s most then likely that the Dragonblight will contain a lot of story in relation to the Blue Dragonflight since it’s described simply as a graveyard for dragons.

Zul’Drak (73-76)

Zul’Drak is located in the northeast section of Northrend just a little bit north of the Grizzly Hills. It’s home of the Drakkari ice trolls. The zone may be devoid of the scourge according to the Lands of Mystery RPG source book.

Grizzly Hills (74-76)

The Grizzly Hills are sandwiched between the Howling Fjord and Zul’Drak zones. Will most then likely contain a vast amount of Furbolgs.

Azjol-Nerub (74-78)

Azjol-Nerub will have an entrance in The Dragonblight and most likely be an actual adventuring zone with possible instances located within. This is based on the lore from various books that state how Dwarves already control the upper parts of Azjol-Nerub and how it has a level range (which was shown in the Games for Windows magazine).

Sholazer Basin (75-78)

Sholazer Basin is located north of Borean Tundra and will be a mostly jungle like zone. Most then likely this will just be a smaller zone for leveling in.

The Storm Peaks (77-80)

The Storm Peaks is a mountainous region on the far north end of Northrend. It will house the Ulduaar and Temple of Storms instances and will facilitate leveling to level 80. It should also contain a lot of the Titan lore as well.

Icecrown Glacier (77-80)

Icecrown Glacier shares the northern tip with The Storm Peaks. It is home to the Icecrown Citadel (the location of the Lich King) and the majority of later events in the Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne RTS game. Not much is known other then the fact nothing lives within Icecrown Glacier. Nothing alive anyway.

Lake Wintergrasp (PvP)

Lake Wintergrasp will be an outdoor PvP zone that will have PvP enabled even on PvE servers. Nothing much is known at the current time.

Dalaran

Dalaran will be to Northrend as Shattrath was to Outland. This means it’ll be the central hub of Northrend. It’s been confirmed that trainers and an auction house will not be inside of Dalaran. Dalaran will most then likely be its own zone given the fact that it is flying in the air.

That’s pretty much it for things we currently know about the zones in Northrend. Check back often as we update this page with any information we get.
