Exploring the New World(s) - Do MMORPGs offer explorers enough?

On Columbus Day, Ethec looks at whether or not MMORPGs offer enough for the explorers in the player community, and if expansions that simply add content for high level players are enough to keep things fresh and interesting.

"As development tools continue to get better and the actual physical design of game worlds becomes easier, no doubt there's an urge to sate player's exploration cravings simply by creating new areas. The problem: as worlds get bigger, player density in "old world" zones decreases. This inevitably leads to fewer grouping and socializing opportunities. This might sound ok in this new age of frantic solo-centric leveling and tedious endgame instancing, but apart from EverQuest and Scars of Velious, I have yet to see a game benefit from a retail expansion."
