Today is Tuesday, which is a
significant day for Blizzard fans. You see, for as long as I've been
playing, Tuesday is the day when servers go down and maintenance
happens. However, it seems that recently, I've gotten just a little
out of practice with this standard routine.
You see, lately, Tuesdays have only
been a small blip on the radar. A rolling restart and we are back up
and running. Patches and extensive downtime? What are those? So, when
I woke up this morning and decided it would be a fantastic day to
level one of my characters, it never occurred to me that I might not
be able to play. Not even once did I consider that the date may mean
servers were down.
Then I tried to log in and the full
horror of the situation dawned on me, the server was down and it was
going to stay that way for awhile. Crap. Now this is the point where
many will tell you to get up, get out, and do something productive
during the downtime. Don't pout about not being able to play, go
outside, visit friends, work, or some other thing that normal people
apparently do in their spare time.
Being very un-normal, these things are
the exact opposite of what I want to do with my day. I want to be
deliciously unproductive and lazy, inside the comfort of my own home,
which is why I wanted to play World of Warcraft. Since that is not an
option today, I found myself searching for ways to fill my time that
don't require me to leave the comfort of my computer chair.
If you are in the same boat, and want
to be awesomely unproductive, but not bored during the game down
time, but aren't sure what to do. Well, I've got some ideas to help
you break up the monotony. Keep on reading for my top 5
(unproductive) ways to spend time during Tuesday maintenance.
World of Warcraft Videos
Being a hugely popular game, World of
Warcraft has managed to inspire the creative minds among it's fans.
This has lead to a slew of art, stories, and more importantly for us
time wasters; video. Podcasts, tutorials, machinima, and even music
videos. There is a little something out there for everyone. The best
part? There are enough WoW related videos out there to keep you
content for a very long time. Just when you think you have watched
them all, ten more pop up that you have never seen before. The
possibilities are almost endless and you never have to leave your
World of Warcraft maintenance days are
a great time to do some maintenance of your own. Update those addons,
defragment your hard drive, and run that virus scan you've been
putting off for weeks. You can choose to watch these things take
place or take a nice nap while they are happening. You get to slack
off and your computer gets a nice refresher in the process.
Now I know what you might be thinking;
I said that everything on this list would be decidedly unproductive.
So you may be wondering how computer maintenance fits in. Trust me
when I say, no one is going to be impressed when you tell them you
spent the day defragmenting your hard drive. In fact, they may
consider staging some kind of intervention for you. So, in my
opinion, computer maintenance makes the cut.
Brush Up on Lore
If you are anything like me, the only
lore you are really familiar with is what you learn from inside the
game. The fact of the matter is, it goes way deeper than that. World
of Warcraft is steeped in lore and it is actually really quite
interesting. For example, did you know that King Varian Wrynn's wife
was killed during a riot in Stormwind? Or that, in the end, Ner'zhul
tried to do the right thing?
Trust me when I say that the lore
behind the game is far more interesting than you might imagine.
Learning the stories behind your favorite characters brings the game
to life on a whole new level So get out there and get reading, you
won't regret it.
The game is down, but there are
hundreds of websites out there that are up and running. All you need
to do is pick your poison. Browse Facebook, troll Twitter, or head on
over to one of the thousands of WoW themed sites out there. Better
yet, head on over to your guild's website and catch up on some
reading there. Chances are that some of your guild mates will be just
as bored (and unproductive) as you are and will be happy to chat.
Remember to refresh repeatedly to achieve maximum time wasting.

Play Something Different
World of Warcraft can become pretty
time consuming. So much so that many of us are certain to have a hard
time finding time for any other games. Tuesday maintenance is the
perfect time to change that. Pick a game you've been wanting to play
and pop it in. It can be something totally new or an old game you
haven't played in awhile. You may love it or hate it, but until you
try it, you won't know. You may find something you want to play again
or, at the very least, you will have a whole new appreciate for World
of Warcraft when you are finally able to play again.
That wraps up my list of top 5
(unproductive) ways to spend maintenance Tuesday. Servers are back up, but
I hope these suggestions allow
you to fill your time with lazy awesome the next time the servers are
down. How do you fill the time when servers are down and you don't
feel like leaving your computer chair? Share your ideas with us in
