Destiny Is Really Just a Nursery Rhyme

You played 100 million hours of a nursery rhyme.  Ruminate on that for a moment.  

The traveller, little light, the darkness….Could it be more obvious?

Destiny is about a Nursery Rhyme we all know and love.

Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.

Twinkle, twinkle, little star
How I wonder what you are
Up above the world so high,
Like a diamond in the sky

When the blazing sun is gone,
When he nothing shines upon,
Then you show your little light,
Twinkle, twinkle, all the night.

Then the traveller in the dark,
Thank you for your tiny spark,
He could not see which way to go,
If you did not twinkle so.

In the dark blue sky you keep,
And often though my curtains peep,
For you never shut your eye,
‘Till the sun is in the sky.

As your bright and tiny spark,
Lights the traveller in the dark.
Though I know not what you are,
Twinkle, twinkle, little star.


Completely unrelated, but fun nonetheless, Bungie is known for thier Easter Eggs.   Is this Master Chief?

Let’s take a look at this nursery rhyme theory shall we?

Twinkle, twinkle little star,
How I wonder what you are,
Up above the world so high,
Like a diamond in the sky.

  • Little star – is this a reference to the ghost?
  • The Guardian doesn’t really know what the ghost is.  None of us do.  How I wonder what you are.
  • Up above the world so high. – The traveller hangs above the last city, protecting it like the armor of the hardest substance on earth, diamond.

When the blazing sun is gone,
When he nothing shines upon,
Then you show your little light,
Twinkle, twinkle, all the night.

  • Is the blazing sun the traveller? The traveller is dying and no longer shines upon Humanity.  He brought the “Golden Age”.   Gold is shiny.  Ohhh, shiny.
  • The traveller with his last power created the ghosts to show their “little light” to help Humanity.
  • The exo-Stranger in one mission refers to the ghost as “little light”.   This seems too spot on to be a coincidence.

Then the traveller in the dark,
Thank you for your tiny spark,
He could not see which way to go,
If you did not twinkle so.

  • Again, the traveller is mentioned.  It seemed an odd naming convention for huge broken sphere floating above Earth, but with this… it makes sense.
  • The ghosts are the eyes and ears of the traveller.  He could not see which way to go if you did not twinkle so.

In the dark blue sky you keep,
And often though my curtains peep,
For you never shut your eye,
‘Till the sun is in the sky.

  • The ghost never leaves the Guardian’s side and he has only one eye, not two as you would expect.  He is constantly watching over the Guardian. 
  • He will never leave until the traveller is resurrected. 

As your bright and tiny spark,
Lights the traveller in the dark.
Though I know not what you are,
Twinkle, twinkle, little star.

  • More traveller, more light, more what the hell are you?

Bungie has taken a Nursery Rhyme that was published in 1806 by Jane Taylor and turned it into a potentially billion dollar IP.   Well played Bungie.  Well played.
