We're on the ground in Reykjavik, Iceland for our annual northward trek to EVE FanFest 2008. Walking in Stations (WIS, because the "ambulatory project" had almost as many consonants as the average Icelandic word) is the focus for this year's FanFest. More on that tomorrow, but for now I give you...
Ten Ton Hammer's Top 5 reasons to visit Iceland:
Architecture inspired by IKEA - Icelandic buildings are square, well constructed with durable materials (if they weren't, they'd blow apart in the perpetual Arctic wind gusts), and can be bought as a kit for $99.95 and assembled yourself. Whale... it's what's for dinner - I'll pass on the fermented shark, but Shamu is tasty. Imagine a good salmon steak made of red meat and the fall-apart consistency of shreadded wheat. Season with fresh peppercorn, grill to medium well, et voila. Blue Opal - You might be disgusted by the idea of menthol schnapps, but for the inevitable head cold, it does the trick. And then it does the trick, if you know what I mean. Icelandic kroner - In a discount sale prompted not by the holiday season but the utter collapse of the country's banking system, prices are roughly half of what they were last year. Of course, last year they were double what we'd pay at home in the US, so it works out. Iceland's natural beauty and people - Aside from the occasional sulphur zone (which, when travelling by car, is a perfect time to relieve yourself of some of the wallpaper-peeling gas from the whalemeat), the many contrasts of Iceland (a glacier next to a volcano, for one) make the landscape unlike any other place on earth. And if you can get past their northern stoicism, you'll discover a creative, well-rounded, funny, and eminently quirky (Bjork wasn't too much of a statistical outlier) native population. What are your hopes for this year's FanFest? Post your thoughts in the Loading... forum, or email me if you like.
