The favoured child of the moment in the MMOG marketing circles seem to be the push for games to allow every subscriber to play on the same server or world. EVE Online and Dark and Light both market heavily on the one world premise.

Do you, the player, really want to have everyone who has purchased, begged, borrowed or stolen a copy of the game to be playing in the same gameworld as you? Chocolate and peanut butter go great together. Does that mean that more chocolate and more peanut butter is even tastier? Would Scooby Doo be more humorous if he was always running around with Yogi Bear and George Jetson?

Bigger isn't always better. I know this. I read it on the "How to meet girls" website. If I saw it on the Interweb then it has to be true.

Many players like to be big fish in little ponds. That's why we have 8,722 guilds with 12 people in them running around the games that currently exist. In a big pond there can be only one top guild, only one top crafter, only one top PvP player, only one...Highlander with a big sword lopping off heads!!! The problem as I see it is that everyone wants to be the "one". People watching Star Wars wanted to be Luke. When Star Wars: Galaxies came out everyone wanted to be a jedi and that became a point of contention.

I say, give us more worlds. Give us more shards. Give us more top leatherworkers who can make a Rubicite layered belt of omnipotence for the hundreds of top players in the hundreds of top guilds. The best players will still rise to the top. There will just be more "tops" to rise to.
