The old joke, "I'm not really a doctor; I just play one on T.V." is taking off in a whole new direction.
I'm not really a half-bull / half-man hybrid, though the girls in my highschool days might have thought so. I just play one for many hours in World of Warcraft. I can tell you exactly why I choose to play a Tauren (The bull/man hybrid) in World of Warcraft. The way that armour looks on the bigger race models appeals to me. Weapons are large in charge. Shield are enormous and look like they might actually block an attack. Those reasons and of course the fact that I was slowly losing what little mind I have left reading the endless and mindless banter that went on in the Alliance chat channels.
Logging into an Alliance character drops the I.Q. of many players by at least 30 points and I can prove it. Enter any battlegrounds as a Horde player and one of the other random people thrown into the killfest with you will form up a group. If they don't and you form the group every player will accept the request and form a raid. Try to get a group formed on the Alliance side. I guarantee it was easier planning the invasion of Normandy than it is to get 10 Alliance players to join a raid in a World of Warcraft battleground.
Before you read any further, pop down to the comments section and rank the races of World of Warcraft based on average age of the player behind the character. For instance if you feel the race with the lowest average real-life age is Human then rate them first. My list looks like this:
- Night Elf
- Human
- Undead
- Troll
- Gnome
- Dwarf
- Tauren
- Orc
I thought that Night Elves were played mostly by young kids and that Dwarves were mostly by the older crowd. Go on now... post your guesses and if you dare, post why you feel your list is in the correct order. If you are reading this via the Loading mailing list then just click here to get to the comments. Tens of thousands of you read this every day. Don't be cowards...go post your list.
I had always believed, based on my observations within the game that the Horde side was made up of older players with a better grasp on teamwork and more experience dealing with other people. For instance, Horde battlegrounds groups actually communicate.
Alliance groups have a tough time even talking in the same channel. It's like you threw 10 autistic people into a game and told them to work together, which explains why I was able to run the flag past eight of them by throwing down a box of toothpicks. They must have all stopped to count them in their heads.
Apparently my observations and the conclusions I came to because of them are way off. The Daedalus Project has some very, no let me say that again more forcefully, *very* interesting information posted in its pages.
What I would find even more interesting is to know what the average age of players in different MMOGs is. For instance, how does EVE Online compare to Guild Wars? It would also be very interesting to know why developers have stuck into certain animal species as racial choices. Cats, bi-ped lizards, now cows and ... keep waiting because that's about it. Why aren't dogs a choice? Surely there are thousands of people who would like to play a character that can lick its own nether regions. It's a given. Isn't it?
Horizons has dragons; enormous, wondrous dragons and I'm confident that many of us would be playing that title, gliding along on our leathery wings, blowing fire from our snouts, had the team waited until it was ready to launch rather than rushing out the door as it was forced to do. The monetary crunch has pwned the mighty dragon.
I say again, what species would make for a great racial choice in a MMOG? Yet another reason to leave a comment. Now get on with it!

- Not Funny... Ever - Anatomy of the Anti-FanBoi "I hate the term FanBoi. I really do. It draws to mind images of the die-hard lackey ignorant to the world around him, unable to see anything past the glimmer and glow of his fixation object. It hints at blind faith, lack of intelligence, and general ass kissery (I made up a word!)."

Well I just started a rogue and have been doing lots of detective work to ferret out the best builds possible for this DPS class. After discussing the class with several different end game rogue players and spending tons of time on various forums I have updated our rogue guide to reflect what I have found. "
