How many of you remember Populous? It was the first "God" game that I ever played and to this day remains one of my nostalgic favourites. The younger, more nimble of mind readers may of played Black and White. B&W is Populous on graphical steroids with a pet.
There is something strangely satisfying about "God" games.
Even games like Sim City or The Sims are at their core games that put you in the position of a God. Your actions affect the world dramatically and instantly.
MMOGs have professed to making you a hero in a grand story, but as any MMOG player knows there is never a grand story and being one hero in a land where everyone else is also a hero isn't quite what you signed up for. The current MMOG system is much like this blog or fast food. It's filling and you come back for more, but you wish something interesting or at the very least entertaining would pop in front of you once in a while.
Today is one of those rare days when something pretty nifty gets covered in Loading... A MMOG is going to let you play God and don't mean in a putzing around in a creepy Second Life kind of way. The Ryzom Ring, a scenario creation toolset for Saga of Ryzom is out and our own aptly nicknamed Byron "Messiah" Mudry is doling out the juicy bits in How Easy Is It To Play God?
Now if we could just get him to stop muttering, "...the ring is my precioussssss" I thin the entire staff would be happier.
