Greetings Castigar.

Thanks for taking some time out to give us a quick interview. I know
you must be busy getting the final touches and plans in place for this
Sunday's upcoming event. I've read over the style="font-weight: bold;"
href="http://forums.station.sony.com/vg/posts/list.m?topic_id=30679">official
announcement, but why don't you take a quick minute to tell
our readers a little bit about the event.

Castigar: style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(51, 102, 102);">

On Sunday, May 4th there will be a server-wide competition/party at The
Deebs on Thestra. The competition portion of the event will challenge
contestants to make their way through a roughly 700-fixture obstacle
course and maze that we have constructed inside the largest room in our
Guild Hall.

Contestants will struggle to make their way through twists
and dead ends, scale walls, overcome barriers, weave through a hall of
mirrors, hot-foot across fire, and even believe in themselves and cross
a bridge of faith. Only an individual who has the stamina and the
willpower to overcome these obstacles will be declared the winner and
be granted a 10plat or bigger prize!

I am also inviting many fellow
Xethians to come out and simply enjoy the party aspect of the event. We
will have four viewing areas set up for spectators to watch the
competition unfold during the night. We also have constructed three
bars where bartenders will be passing out various concoctions and
beverages, a stripper stage adorned with the finest dancers in all
Telon, and a Dueling Ring where anxious spectators can unleash any
built-up tension.

I am also proud to announce that members of the
Crimson Fellowship, Vanguard's premier game guides, will also be
attending the event and handing out party favors and performing tricks
for the crowd. Many should come out because it will be a night to
remember!

Dalmarus:

I've watched href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rl9RRSDCL00">the trailer
you created for the upcoming event and I have to say, I can't imagine
how much time it had to have taken to get everything set up. How long
did it take to get everything in place and how many testers did you
have trying to put the mazes through the paces?

Castigar style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(204, 0, 0);">:

The course took approximately three weeks to plan and set up. Some of
our guild crafters and a few friends of mine crafted thousands of
vielthread bolts and grinded out hundreds of carpets to be used in the
event as floors, walls, and ceilings. Many different professions of
crafters were also used in making other various items for the event.
The course, for the most part, is complete except for a few minor
tweaks that are being done here and there.

The course was tested as it
was built. I'd spend all day adding fixtures onto the course, and then
invite guildees or just simply strangers in the chunk to come out and
run through the event. Our primary testing was done by a psionicist and
a few alts of different races. We tested the small and large race's
jump distances, width, and height throughout every part of the course
to guarantee that any character could successfully make their way
through the course and win the competition.

We are still testing the
course even during this final week before the day of the event. I have
probably asked about ten different people throughout the course of
these past few weeks to test the course and many of them have returned
several times to attempt new sections.

style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">Dalmarus:

This isn't the first event you've run on the Xeth server. On January
1st, 2008, you ran a href="http://forums.station.sony.com/vg/posts/list.m?&topic_id=23524">server
wide guild competition. Were you already thinking about the
next competition you were going to run, or did the idea come to you
later?

Castigar style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(204, 0, 0);">:

Back in December of '07, I had no idea that I was going to be helping
with a server wide event. The opportunity started just as a simple
conversation between two players. Personally, I didn't think it was
going to be successful, but I put a lot of time, effort and resources
into the planning and organization.

When January 1st rolled around, I
was very nervous, but the results speak for themselves. I was extremely
pleased with the turnout and the support for the event. Many people
showed up that night and the competition was a complete success.

Based
on the results of that night, the idea did cross my mind to host
another event that had the possibility of being just as successful.
However, the effort put into the Drinking Competition was very taxing.
Many individuals approached me and let me know how much they enjoyed
the event. Several voiced their support of having another sever wide
event, but with my responsibilities as a guild leader and the need to
progress through APW, I had to pace myself.

After about four months, I
got the nerve to announce our 2nd server-wide event...which leads us to
today's conversation. I came up with the idea for this event's
competition in March, so it's a fairly recent idea. I hope the idea is
as successful as the Drinking Competition.

style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">Dalmarus:

Have you always enjoyed setting up events like this for player
communities, or is Vanguard: Saga of Heroes the first game you've done
this for?

Castigar style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(204, 0, 0);">:

Actually, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes is my first long-term MMO. I played
Lineage II for about three months six years ago, so I am very new to
the online gaming community. The week I started Vanguard, I formed a
guild with five other strangers that I had met outside of Leth Nurae,
and they chose me as their guild leader.

As part of my position, I
started hosting small events or socials for my guild to get together.
Those socials grew even larger and larger and we even started inviting
other guilds to join us in joint guild socials. I guess the idea just
expanded to include the entire server. The "Xeth Server Wide Summer
Competition Extravaganza" will be our guild's 11th Guild Social that I
have hosted since Radiant Heroes' founding on February 13th, 2007.

Dalmarus:

What made you decide to take the time to do this?

Castigar style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(204, 0, 0);">:

Why does anyone play a game? To have fun! The social aspect of MMO's is
the main reason why people enjoy these games so much. I receive a
certain pride and sense of accomplishment when people approach me after
an event and tell me that they sincerely enjoyed themselves and that it
was a unique event that they hadn't encountered before. My goal is to
arrange opportunities where people can come together, make new friends,
and walk away with memories. The benefit of providing that to others is
priceless.

style="width: 300px; height: 188px; float: right;" alt="maze1"
src="http://media.tentonhammer.com/vanguard/gallery/albums/Vanguard-Item-Pics/maze1.jpg"
hspace="5" vspace="5">Dalmarus:

Before we go, is there any thing else you'd like to tell everyone about
the event?

Castigar style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(204, 0, 0);">:

We had about 80 competitors in the January Drinking competition. My
goal for this server event is to get over 100 characters involved in
the competition. Please tell all of your friends you know in game about
this event and let's crash the chunk!

The competition is for all
players regardless of level, skill, or race and we have arranged for
several different entree fees from 2g-15g so that all may participate.
Also, this is not a sole guild event but a community event.

I am still
searching for volunteers who would like to offer their time and assist
me in the competition's logistics. There are many positions including
referees, judges, bartenders, strippers, and event coordinators. If
anyone would like to donate their time then they just need to contact
me in game.

Dalmarus:

Thanks again for taking the time to answer these questions for us,
Castigar. The event looks like a lot of fun and should bring some good
times to the server this Sunday!

Castigar style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(204, 0, 0);">:

Thank you for your time Dalmarus and I hope to see many
new
faces on May 4th. Onward My Friends! I'll see you in Telon.
