Gamers are a notoriously fickle and faithless lot. There's isn't a game in existence that could

hold the undivided attention of any gamer for more than a few days.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that a gamer doesn't have a favourite game. One to which

they will always return, like a well loved pair of pj's. But let's face it. Gamers are like

adreneline junkies. They're always looking for the next fix.

Everytime a new game comes out, the junkies flock. They gobble it up and play it until one of two

things happen. They either beat the game entirely (first person shooters, usually) or they lose

interest because the game just wasn't all that it was cracked up to be.

This is particularly true of MMO players. Everyone has their favourite and they always come back

to it. But, they always have that little bit on the side. It could be another MMO that isn't as

interesting, but is good for killing a few hours here and there. It could be a random single player

game that they can beat in half a day. Then there are the random flash games on the internet to get

your gaming fix while you're at work and can't log into your real game.

WoW - aka World of Warcraft

Not bad for what it is. But let's face it, it's singularly uninteresting for long periods of

time. It's great for a little break away from more cerebral games that require a good deal of

attention and concentration. You get almost instant gratification. Fast leveling, simple and easily

completed quests, not a lot of commitment required.

Oblivion

Single player heaven. Quick fix addiction from the gods. And I still cannot get my copy loaded.

Grr. This game is great for filling up a few mindless hours here and there. Very little restriction,

you can do anything you want, and you can beat the game in a couple of hours, or a few days.

Doom, Quake, Half Life, SoCom, Battlefield, etc etc etc

Any of these games are sheer bliss for taking a few hours and just blowing stuff up. And let's

face it, who doesn't love to blow stuff up? Random unadulterated violence. It's fantastic and in a

few hours you blow off steam and have some mad giggly fun. There might be something wrong with

giggling like a lunatic whilst driving a tank about unloading fire power on the enemy. Do we really

care? Nah.

OGame

This one isn't really a mainstream sort of title. It's an internet based dealie. A lot of people

I know spend their work day investing hours into becoming a space pirate. Building fleets, raiding

neighbors, and in some cases *coughsCOYOTEcoughs* communicating entirely in pirate lingo. It doesn't

take a lot of time and effort, so it's good for those little fixes during the day.

Fortunately, EverQuest doesn't get cranky when we stray. It isn't that we don't love our main

squeeze or anything like that... We just need to play the other games out there. They need love too.

No one can ever play just one game. I mean hell, I still play board games on occasion. Card games.

I'd play pen and paper D&D if I could find people to play with.

I think it stems more from a need to keep our minds active and our hearts young than anything

else. We're gamers. We'll always play the latest game just to try it out. Like some folks need to

get the latest gadgets or the season's latest fashions. Either that, or we've all got massive ADD and

need medicating... Ooooo SHINIE!
