3.0 – Spell Progression Table
To be an effective warlock you must know your spells through and through. Study this section to gain a thorough understanding of your fullest capabilities. You’ll find that there’s much repetition. Hopefully this means you’ll have plenty of time to develop habits that will serve you well all the way to 60 and beyond.
AoE Spells - (area of effect)
DD Spells - (direct damage)
DoT Spells - (damage over time)
Buffs - Single Target and Self
Buffs - Group
Power Drain Target Enemy to Power over Time Group
Debuff
Dispel
Hate Reduction
Health to Power Conversion
Interrupt/Pacify

3.1 – Soloing
Refer to the Basics
section for introductory information on soloing. Remember to buff
at the start of each fight!
Here are your solo
HO’s… if you hope to survive solo you must make good use of these.
Arcane Fury
(common)
Lightning >
Lightning
Doubles your
finishing nuke
Arcane Storm
(AoE, rare)
Lightning >
Star
Makes your
finishing nuke AoE
Arcane
Enlightenment (very rare)
Lightning >
Flame
Instant 20%
power replen, converts half of damage taken into power (1:2.5 ratio)
for 90 sec.
The process is roughly the root – nuke procedure of old, with a few
twists. First, root the enemy and blast them with as many debuffs
and DoTs you can fit
in. Root again, move back a bit, and fire off an HO. Stun
the mob, go through another HO. Repeat
until the mob is dead. Again, don’t be afraid to run if roots
break prematurely or things otherwise go sour! You simply can’t
take much damage.
If you find the root breaking more often than you'd like, another good method is to simply root - defuff - nuke - nuke - root. Repeat as needed. The root has a chance to break every time the mob takes damage, so when you hit the mod, you want to make it count. DoTs can cause the root to break quicker than you'd like and before they have a chance to do any real damage.
Be sure to make use
of interrupt spells, stifles, and power drains against casters.
They are easily forgotton, so start making it a habit to use them as early as possible. Your STR and INT debuffs are particularly useful against
fighters. As the battle nears a finish and you have spare mana,
be sure to ply those spells that grant Nil crystals if you haven’t done
so already.
Through careful use
of your roots and stuns, you may be able to effectively confront a
green group of mobs, though be ready to run! Stand back and root
the toughest fighter (or the group with “Bony Grasp” if you’re
40+). Use Nullification on the caster to interrupt the cast
they’re likely cooking off. Use “Suffocating Cloud” (or one of
it's upgrades) to do some
AoE damage with a chance to stifle the group, then “Grievous Blast” (if
you’re 36+) for more AoE damage plus a chance to stun the group.
By now, it’s likely one or more of the mobs is attacking you.
From here on out, treat this as a series of consecutive solo
encounters, complete with DoTs and HO’s but be sure to keep stuns up on
the toughest meleers constantly. Remember to take out any priest
types first too.
3.2 – Grouped
Combat
In grouped combat,
you’ll want to leave starting the HO’s to scouts and
fighters. Be sure to complete HO’s; for some reason
mages seem to be the worst culprits of broken HO’s. This is partially because of the looooong cast times that the warlocks face on some of their spells. Remember to
start small with your spells and ramp up to avoid aggro. I
recommend keeping the Main Tank targeted for the most part. The
warlock is one of the worst for stealing aggro from the tank if not
played properly. Use your debuffs and move on to your DoTs.
You'll probably want to lay off of those AoEs until the Main tank has
used the group taunt a few times. Once the tank has a good amount
of Hate set, send out a few DD nukes and and AoE nuke then reset your
DoTs if need be. Keep in mind that this tactic is for some of the
longer battles with Heroics and Epics. If you are in a larger
group and are killing some smaller "trash mobs" then you should be able
to get away with ending the battle quick with your large AoE and DD
spells.
Roots and stuns are
useful if things are going bad, but keep in mind that these draw a load
of aggro. Bony and Skeletal Grasp are great for running from
large groups when needed because of the AoE root effect. Beware
of root resists. These aren't guaranteed to stick. If it's
time to run, you root to save the group, but a foolish, but brave
groupmate stays back to fend off the enemy, your root will be even more
likely to break. Try and solidify the understanding with your
group, that you have this spell and will use it if you need to run. You might want to even associate your AoE or Single target root with a macro that says something like "Rooting mob do not attack". Players many times don't know when you are rooting.
Use your Nil Crystal
consumptive spells (“Abhorrent Gift”) if your group seems to be wearing
through its power prematurely.
Your “emergency”
spells should be at the back of your mind too, “Nullmail” should get
the mobs off your back and heal you up a bit if the mobs come at you,
and the power transfer spells should give your priest a lift if you
have mana and the healer doesn’t.
High levelers: Note
also that "Devastation" (lvl 50) is a encounter AoE DoT + Stun for up
to 5 enemies (within AoE range of the primary target), a very useful
multi-enemy spell (but will not affect epic targets. [Thanks
